This doesn't really sound like Whiskeytown all that much tbh, at least not significantly more than his other country based albums, this is a lot closer to straight-up country whereas Whiskeytown is very much quintessential alt-country.

And idk with this one in particular I didn't get a whole ton from the songwriting which is what I think made it come across more as homage. Adams' strength has never really been in his sound so good songwriting is essential for him and this one seemed below average from that perspective. When he combines good songwriting with his somewhat derivative sounds, as on albums like Heartbreaker and Cold Roses, he's about as good as anyone in his field, but when he doesn't have that it all just comes across as kind of empty.

fair yeah i love his honky tonk kinda voice on this personally
I for sure know I'm in the minority in enjoying this as much as I do though, Heartbreaker etc is much easier to love

To be fair most of the albums I've heard from him I've rated 3.5+ so he's still a pretty consistent artist overall. Though most of what I have yet to hear of his is stuff that most people don't rate very high so that judgment could change.
Still gotta hear the other two Whiskeytown albums too, only heard Stranger's Almanac but it's prob my 2nd favorite Adams effort overall.
