Great album, even at their roughest they're better than so many bands out there.
And I liked Ultra Blue!

Thrice at their rawest is definitely First Impressions, followed by their cover of "Seeing Red/Screaming At A Wall" off of Tony Hawk. But this still rocks.

I've decided to give this album another chance since my music tastes have gotten much better since the last time I listened to this.

Aw first thrice I ever heard. lovely album, but i must agree with you on Dustin screaming in every song. It doesn't need to be at that. but this is one of their first albums and he has progressed and changed more to not make mistakes like in this album

Has anyone caught the Dragonball Z reference in T&C? I laughed when I saw it.

This and IOS are Thrice's most passionate music by far if you ask me. These two albums basically launched their career and are what set them on the road to where the are.
It's disappointing that they refuse to play almost all of this era of their career and have gotten so bland and boring, both live and in the studio over the last few years.

this cd is pretty bad
|

not bad though. just thrice. well intentioned, filled with thought and oozing effort but always lacking any sort of catchiness or fun (minus AATA)

So if I'm like a huge Thrice fan should I get this

This is so different from their recent stuff like The Alchemy Index its not even funny.
It's better if you liked them from the time they only had this album out, it was really cool to watch them mature as musicians.
This album is good. Production is kinda shitty, as is the drumming. Riley was never an amazing drummer... but its got a lot of great songs.

Rly you think Riley isn't very good? I always thought he was great for what Thrice play, though I haven't heard anything older than The Illusion of Safety.

honestly man, if you liked Illusion then check out Vehissu and Artist in the Ambulance, you will like them both without question... personally i don't know wich one I like best of those two, its a tie

If you were talking to me, I own every Thrice album from Illusion onward. Vheissu is one of my favorite albums and TAitA is great too but my least favorite Thrice album out of the ones I've heard by far.

If you liked Illusion you should like Identity Crisis, its a more raw version of Illusion.

Had this been a one-off, we-never-saw-them-again album, then I probably would agree with the rating. Like you, I didn't come to Thrice the usual way (I went backwards - TAITA, then TIOS, then IC) but in some ways, I think it made me appreciate them more as a band. It also helps to watch "If We Could Only See Us Now..." since I think that puts the album into proper perspective.
I think I'd look at this like I do at Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" - it is definitely not "Master of Puppets" or even really "Ride the Lightning," it's really more of a band trying to find its voice, but knowing what comes next and seeing those hints makes you savor it all the more.
I can't believe you dislike the intro to "Phoenix Ignition." That is just beyond me. The whole juxtaposition of practically campfire sing-along guitar/vocals with the rest of that song makes the song stronger by playing the two dynamics off of each other.
You point out that Dustin screams too much on this album. I have to be honest, pre-Vheissu, it's really hard to think of any songs that he DIDN'T scream on, so I think that point is invalid and sort of undermines your credibility.
From a reviewing perspective, long lists of pros/cons at the end don't work very well. Short, three-item summaries are a much better way to go if that's your style, but I agree with Storm In A Teacup - this really felt like a rushed review. On the other hand, I totally agree with your sentiment at the beginning - this is the Thrice album that you WANT to love but sometimes you just can't. Personally, I find myself less partial to their punkier material and always preferred the more hesher-style songs until Vheissu and The Alchemy Index.
