I saw Deftones live on the BlackDiamondSkye tour...they put on a good show. Haven't listened to their albums though.

I disagree with this, but it was a pretty good review.
Although for me, like some others have already mentioned, it's the repetition that really makes the album. And it's not like it's just the same thing over and over, there are slight variations. Like that middle drone section you mentioned in the title track. Sure, it's the same chord for a long long time, but there are slight variations and little subtleties with each repetition that make each separate moment unique in their own way.
But I can definitely see where you're coming from though. The intro to "A Piece of the Sky" was a bit bloated for my liking, and there were a few minor issues I had with the album but overall, this thing is by and far AOTY.
