I agree with you, but I still love some parts of this enough to rate it well. Definitely not their best.

I really only still listen to the 14-min segment of "Great Expectations" to "The Incident" and "Black Dahlia" is unreal too. But other than that...yeah.

Good review, couldn't disagree more with your opinions. In absentia is one of my favorite albums of all time, and saying it's formulaic couldn't be further from the truth.

This is Porcupine Tree's first "burnt out syndrome" album.

No wonder really as to why Wilson turned to his solo work or his collaboration with Akerfeldt after this album.

Good review man, but I totally disagree with you (I'm being a fanboy now, I know). I see what you want to point out and while the album does feel tired sometimes and some tracks are unnecessary, I love this album as disjointed as it is. It's just my opinion though. pos.

Sad that "Time Flies" hasn't been mentioned yet, neither in review nor comments. It's the centerpoint of the album, more than double the length of everything else on the first disc besides "I Drive The Hearse," and one of the top five songs that PT has in their entire catalogue, IMO.

Only listened to this once and it did nothing for me. I'd give it another go but to be honest I don't care for much of PT's more recent (post Stupid Dream) stuff besides Deadwing, which is great cos it has Arriving Somewhere.

Good review, pos'd.

@Voivod, valid point, it seems like he burnt out a bit. Solo works definitely worth it though ans storm corrosion as well. But still a 2? Dayum, but I can understand why.

I actually really like this album, probably just 'cause it's reminiscent of more old-school PT like Lightbulb Sun and that. Then again, I really didn't like Grace for Drowning much, so whatever...I guess my opinion must be 'wrong'

It did remind me of 1999-2000 era PT but the execution and production weren't as good. Grace is an acquired taste I guess.

Great review, pos'd.
This is a fantastic album in my opinion though. It was really the first PT I heard so I guess that's a factor but yeah there's something about it I just love so much.

"Sad that "Time Flies" hasn't been mentioned yet" - the trouble with that song is that 2 mins in it just makes me want to go listen to 'Animals' instead

Never read a review that I disagree with more. However not a bad review by all means, just wrong ;)
