Vocalist Jonathan Carpenter also struggles to utilize his voice in an innovative manner, adhering strictly to pitch-corrected singing for the melodic moments

I said in another review that the Cynic influence on this piece of work was huge, and I think this kind of goes hand in hand with it. But I do agree with the fact they do seem stuck in the middle. They just should have abandoned all the heavy parts - even if it would have pissed off their main fanbase.

Nice review dude, and welcome as a Contributor.

I honestly did not enjoy this album myself either, but it did have its moments of brilliance, so I guess a solid "3" sounds about right for me.

The review is killer. I was waiting for your big Contributor debute. POS'd.

really great review and completely agree. I would rather spin Exoplanet any day over this.

you killed it with that last paragraph, band is trying stuff that only cynic can pull off, the album is okay still, nice listen even if its an awkward one.

If there wasn't a hint of deathcore, this might be one of my favourite albums of all time. When
they're not trying to to chug uselessly while growling, which is fine on it's own I'm sure, the soft
moments are gorgeous. Then... punctuated by, like the review says, unwarranted heaviness.

Basically I was looking for Carbon Based Anatomy pt II.

I don't think a complete lack of heaviness would make it better, they just need to integrate it better

on Exoplanet the ambient parts worked so well because they served as climaxes and compliments to the heavy parts, on this the roles have switched, except they haven't written the songs well enough to make the heavy parts as climactic as they should be

"unforeseen by the group this far"

I don't think this is the word you were looking for. otherwise, great review

I'm not all that inspired to check these guys out though

Nice review

The summary is terrible though!

It's not necessarily the heaviness I don't like - it's the fact that when it does get heavy, it's painfully average, generic, devoid of melody or character, etc, etc.

Very nice, their debut wore off me quicker than I expected so I doubt this would be up my alley.

Pretty much. And I'm not complaining. Sounds like The Faceless is also going the way of Cynic for their next album. Even failing at copying those guys impresses me, so I'm excited.

Good album to smoke a fat blunt and listen to. For what it is, it's pretty fuckin' good.

Mostly. But it gives me hope that one day they'll drop the genre stereotypes and just make stuff in the vein of where Cynic is now.
