i just compared this and detest back to back sampling and there are extremely miniscule differences in the vocals. i think you're just being dramatic. the riffs are the same as they've ever been since day one. the song structures are the same as they've ever been. the production is SLIGHTLY thinner than Detest which was MUCH thinner than ithyphallic and the albums before it, but nothing that should deter a fan. it's still the same exact band. the only thing that isn't characteristic is the DSO-esque riff in the first song on the album. that's about it. and the lack of an "epic" song.

@Anthracks: Of course there are heavy riffs and lots of playing on the lowest string but nothing that really stands out, like the intro to Sacrifice unto Sebek, As He Creates' 'chorus', Kafir's verse... stuff like that. Nothing to be found here.
And yeah maybe I'm dramatic, because yes the difference in vocals from TWtGD isn't that much of a stretch. Same could be said of AotW to Ithyphallic and from that to the last album but it's the small things that make the difference. It's a gradual progression from AotW to this, and it's enough. I personally can hear the result of their striving for more clarity and frankly I don't like it.

...yet he couldn't save this from being their weakest offering to date. It's kinda frustrating because all their albums before this ruled :/
Yeah, I try to pretend that Ithyphallic isn't a thing, too.

the vocals are a weak link on this

For someone who loves metal and middle eastern influences in music and has an aspiration of becoming an Egyptologist, this band would seem like a no brainer. But yeah...not really. Maybe it's the song titles like Hittite Dung Incantation that get to me...or the sucky vocals.

Ill bet this sucks ass but i guess i'll check it out

I really hate the production in the new album. But nevertheless another good Nile album.
So it has that high pitched, thin sound then? hate that

^ It seems to me that the guitars could use some more bottom end to them. Because of that the production kinda seems to me dry. And Nile, first and foremost for me it's all about the guitars and secondly for the drumming (whitchever the drummer is). Except for that "probem?" that I stated before, At The Gates Of Sethu it's not by any means a bad album, it has some great songs there. Give it a spin bloozcoolz.

Not that it's entirely related, though it could fund our difference in our opinion, but I don't find those to be standout moments in Nile's discography at all. To me the best song on Detest, by a very large margin, was Permitting the Noble Dead..., and my three favorite Nile albums are Ithyphallic, In Their Darkened Shrines, and Black Seeds of Vengeance. Annihilation of the Wicked was the first album I liked, but it's definitely among my least favorites, if not my least favorite overall. I suppose we just look for different things in this band. It's interesting though because this album leads right into Black Seeds on my media player, and there is barely any difference in the song structures / riffing between those two, and they transition so effortlessly (despite the obvious difference in production, they are of the same ilk), which I suppose explains why I like this one so much.

I meant that those were good examples of when the heavy riffs stand out, where you feel the low-end so to speak, not necessarily their best riffs. But yeah Permitting the Noble Dead... is killer, especially that ending riff.
My fav Nile are probably ITDS, AotW, BSoV = Ithyphallic.

Album is definitely a grower but I believe the band should remix this. The sound is over-compressed.

This is such a pleasant fucking surprise. The drums and production are wonderful, i can actually feel the rhythms. The guitars don't sound like mud, and the vocals feel a little more angry and passionate than the usual grunting. Has more of a thrashy feel than their usual albums. I've been listening to this nonstop and can't wait to see what it can do in the gym. What were you guys expecting, a black seeds clone? come on.
