If you're into early Sabbath and if you like slow rhythms, heavy riffs and melodic solos then yes. But
you must begin from their earliest records.
|
| |
I'll definitely take a look at it then, thanks!

You won't be disappointed man. Candlemass may be tagged as Doom, but their music is accessible and every single person who loves Metal in general must dig at least their first 4 albums.

Have to listen. I liked their early releases, but haven't listened their newer efforts. Hope it's interesting, at least.

The early staff of these guys rules hard. Haven't heard their recent albums, but this seems mildly interesting.

You should Robert Lowe a go. He is a good vocalist, and the albums with him have some extremely excellent songs. Just listen to the "Hammer of Doom."

You are one of the best reviewers on this site Voivod, hands down!!!
Need to hear this.

Thanks man.
On another note, I really like the "orthodox christian"-influenced album cover.
It reminds of the paintings of the saints in Greek christian orthodox churches.

damn gota check

good review. i especially like the last sentence. i haven't listened to this band a whole lot so i'll probably check out the first couple of albums first.
|
| |
Impressive review indeed man.
I know these guys are like the doom metal forefathers, but never managed to get into them. do you think this is a good starting point?
The only Candlemass album I know is Ancient Dreams, and even though it starts great it gets boring really fast.

Didn't even know this was coming out until I was stacking the back shelves in HMV...

@Dreamflight: I'm not a big fan of these guys, but love a lot of the bands influenced by them. Try the first three albums by Solitude Aeturnus or "After the Fall" by Forsaken. "Silent Ruins" by Isole is pretty good too.

@ Dreamflight
Epicus, Doomicus, Metallicus is an eternal masterpiece.
Also get Nightfall and Tales Of Creation.

Decent album, certainly the worst of their Lowe era. Most probably it's a 3. There are a few good
songs, but that's not enough and the album lacks in epic tracks such "The House Of 1000 Voices, or
"The Hammer Of Doom", 2 songs that gave quality to the predecessor of this record.
I Have to give it a few more spins to fully evaluate it.

Nevertheless, most of the riffs are great and Lars Johansson's leads are also noteworthy. I have said it before Johansson is one of the finest guitarists you'll find in Metal. I always loved his style and his solos in dominant phrygian add more character to the overall sound of Candlemass.

Yeah, imo this is a 3. I feel like the band was kinda lazy during the recording sessions. It seems to me that most of the ideas are recycled here and i always expect sth more from a band of their calibre. Also, Leif's voice caused me to facepalm a few times during the intro of the last song.
Of course the album isn't totally bad. The first four tracks are all very good songs.
