this is how sputniks' reviewing should evolve- no more 5-paragraph philosophizing essays
No.
yes it should
|
| |
"Post-metal lite" is probably the worst summary since, "Dubstep's impression of hip-house"
|
| |
No, it should not. If we are not a webzine than why limit yourself to a few sentences? Take the latest
Adam Downer review for instance, though he later explained why the review tells me almost absolutely
nothing about the bands sounds. Without the name dropping at the end it sounds like a brief insight
into that particular record label, and I could have googled that.
We don't need shorter reviews that have no content, we need reviews that actually REVIEW something (ie
the music).

| |
yeah I get your point acanthus
I just think that shorter reviews are always preferable- that doesn't mean they have to be hollow. A short review can be as informative and critical as a big one, but that depends on the style, the words and generally the writing.
in the end it all comes down to impression and "economy". If one wants an in-depth analysis of an album or an extended criticism it's ok, but in my opinion reviewing is transforming the music into words and thus propose or reject it. It's a kind of translation, and if you want to share it with some people in such a hostile and information-heavy environment you have to be kinda laconic

I see yours as well, the style and writing really do make a huge difference in the review; normally I
find these lacking or overly haughty in the shorter reviews.

All I can say is that I'm happy you like the review, Acanthus, especially since you don't fancy short pieces. And I personally do not have such a strong stance on review lengths as you and scissorlocked have. I myself write the way I feel is most appropriate for a certain individual album. If I can get my point across in 200-300 words, I'll do so, but if I think it's vital to explain it in heavy detail or I feel the album could do with a more in-depth analysis/coverage, I'll take the multi-paragraph route.
And the summary is absolutely fine as it describes the essence of this album, aka, it does what a summary is supposed to do.

I heard The Flood/The Fall a while back and liked it, so I'll probably check this out sometime soon.

Hahah glad I didn't come across as hating on your work sir, I've no right to begin with let alone the fact that I've not written one myself in sometime.

the band's name screams "post metal lite"
i mean, i just hear the name and i think "oh shit this will be instrumental heavy post-rock that could be sort of considered post-metal"

Every band with the word ocean in the name should end.
Yes, even The Ocean. They aren't what they used to be.
