the caretaker's work (especially empty bliss) deals with similar themes of decay but is way less boring and more beautiful imo

yea i dont dig these albums

seems they're more about the artistic themes and how they were made than the music

Idk, I don't feel as if you could match the organic side of decay here. It's not for everyone though, I'll give you that.

listened to them all today writing an essay

it's completely different to rating every other record though, which is where my difficulty lies: it's impossible to not take into account any symbolism you personally extract from the loops, what kind of mindset they put you in, etc etc.

I don't agree, I think instrumental and ambient music especially leave a lot up to the listener. I mean, obviously things like GY!BE will pretty much straight up tell you what to feel, but it isn't so rare to be left to your own devices. I quite like it: it means you can share what you feel with other people and kind of connect over something you've invested yourself in.

Someone in the comments calls this uplifting - for the second half I can only hear pain and mourning.

problem is i barely listen to ambient so it's definitely uncommon ground to be interpretive

scary, too - wait till you rate a classic ambient album with anything below a 3 and have to defend your opinion with "it's just how I feel"... unless you're about to do just that ;)

I think I heard Substrata a while back and thought it was a borderline 2.5..

I do like these though, this is probably the best of the tapes although my favourite track is definitely dlp 3
