No, I did not give it a "1" only because of Portnoy's drumming.
First of all, the songwriting recreates new boundaries for the word "pathetic". It's that bad. You've probably heard 99% of the guitar parts in songs from some mainstream metal album that were never released as singles, that is, you've heard them in filler tracks. Nothing special at all. And the drums were definitely not average. They were BLAND. The sound of a heavy metal album is heavily driven by the power of the drummer. This was, in my opinion, the limpest performance of Portnoy ever. The drumming of "Black Clouds" sounded more heavy metal than this; and that is a progressive metal record, not a heavy metal record.
Furthermore, Russel Allen's vocals sound downright terrible over here. It's as if Portnoy was saying: "You have to sound METAL, man. You just have to sound metal." The outcome was Russel Allen straining his vocals and sounding disgusting.
There. That's why I gave it a "1".

in response to people dogging amazon reviews... amazon is probably the reason i got into this site in the first place. that's where i started reading/ writing reviews. solid source overall depending on what kind of music you're reading up on.

I'm not dogging Amazon reviews. I read them before I buy just about anything (even if I'm not buying it from Amazon). I was dogging someone stealing a review from such an obvious site and reposting it here.

bumped my rating down from a 3 to a 2.5, this isn't as horrible as it's made out to be by some here but it's pretty bland
and generic

Symphony X and Dream Theater aren't similar bands, just because the vocalist and drummer from those bands are present doesn't make them similar sounding bands -_-.

"Adrenaline Mob are moving forward without drummer Mike Portnoy, getting the creative juices flowing again in the studio. In a new update from guitarist Mike Orlando, the axeman reveals that pre-production is underway on the band’s next album."
Wait so the guys actually care enough about this band to keep it going?

I actually DID like this album A LOT. I know it isn't the finest work Portnoy or Allen have done, but who was expecting that? This is their first album together. It has a balanced amount of power, technicality, and melody. The sound is good, the heavy parts are HEAVY, the choruses have good melodies, the vocals are dynamic, Mike Orlando can SHRED THE FUCK OUT (I didn't like his melodic solos, though), and Portnoy plays just the right amount of stuff (he doesn't have to play everything he can, all the time, right?). And I like the artwork and some lyrics. "All On The Line" is the best song for me, it is about Russell Allen's daughter's problems, and when you see them live, you feel the mood of the song and the intensity with which Allen sings it. The are awesome live.
