Humbug is definitely their best because they grew out of the whole "Teen drama" lyrics and spastic pop songs. The music was much darker and psychedelic, serving a higher purpose than just something to jam to. The music has a hypnotic quality to it.

I just can't get into anything of theirs beyond this record and a few random singles here and there. Everytime I wind up listening to one of their new records I wind up feeling a bit disappointed, maybe because I expect something like this album here and they're just not that band anymore. I wouldn't say their later work is bad or anything though.

No i hear you. I particularly like the Monkeys' new Psychedelic sound, but there are a few bands that i like who have changed into a completely different sound that I just dont approve of... it's frustrating when that happens.
