A lot of the songs have the exact same song structure though.
Heavy/acoustic/back to heavy

This is my favorite Opeth album...one of my all time faves.
Here's what I have to say about people who complain about the songs being too long: though your opinion is justified in that they do drag a little bit, but its hard to imagine the songs without those cool parts. Take Bleak for instance...that blues interlude, to me, it is so cool that it would take away from the song if you cut it out.
I don't know, I think that's where Opeth's progressive roots come from, its just a fact that they are progessive death metal...this stuff is to be expected.
I agree that The Funeral Portrait and Dirge for November aren't that good (Funeral Portrait being my least fave on the album, dont even listen to the song), I think the greatness of the first 4 tracks, especially my fave, The Drapery Falls, makes up for it.
Plus, dude, the lyrics on BWP are just phenominal, as usual...

I totally agree with you. Sure, Opeth's songs are really long. I can't deny that fact. But it's not that big of a deal when every part of this album is essential and the songs wouldn't be nearly as good without it.
Like you said, Bleak wouldn't be nearly as good without the blues interlude. The Leper Affinity wouldn't be as epic as it is without the piano solo at the end. I could say something about every song, but you basically get the point.
It's a bummer knowing that Opeth will never make another album as perfect as this. It's also a shame knowing that few metal bands will ever be able to touch this, and most progressive bands will never attain such beauty. This Message Edited On 05.30.06

Martin had tons of problems with his back and was also going through lots of anxiety. This went on for months, so he decided to quit the band.

"Dirge for November" is probably the only track I tend to skip over. It's probably one of the most boring Opeth songs I've heard.

The Leper Affinity makes me drool. Literally. Blackwater Park is even better though. I'm not quite sure how this is possible, but it is. I dont know how a song can be manage to be better than TLA but there is and its by the same artist. I 'heart' Opeth.
I love you too Thor...but in a non-gay way...if that is at all possible. This Message Edited On 11.19.06

I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy since I don't even know the names of the guys in this band - unless I go and look them up - but anyhow, here I am entranced by 'dirge for november' reading this site in a detached sort of a way and I just think 'Oh man, an album like this comes along once in a decade if you are lucky.' So thanks to Thor & all the other reviewers at sputnik who actually convinced me to get hold of this album. Merry Xmas.
