"Eyes Wide Open" is nearly as good as "Somebody That I Used to Know". Nearly.

"Holy crap, I didn't realize how much "Somebody That I Used to Know" had blown up, I didn't know it went to number one on Billboard this past week, that's nuts for an Australian indie pop song."
More like nuts for ANY alternative song; "Somebody That I Used to Know," "Pumped Up Kicks" and "We Are Young" were exceptions to the rule AFAIA (STIUTK is better than both, FWIW, though PUK is good too).

^ those are all indie songs, not alternative. Alt rock songs make it to the top of the billboard all the time

Indie pop/soul has been raping the charts for what feels like forever. The marketing mind is targeting
people that think exactly what you just said.
And props for the Michael Westen pic

I was surprised at how bad this album was, because I had very high expectations. "Somebody That I Used to Know" was an interesting enough song, but it seems like Gotye is destined for 1-hit wonder status, in the US at least. The album has its moments, but IMO is too disjointed, and it seems like he loses steam about halfway through. His Peter Gabriel songs (Eyes Wide Open, Easy Way Out are pretty decent, but then halfway through the album I feel like I'm listening to somebody else. While chameleon qualities and diversity of sound are normally a good thing, I feel like the sudden shift breaks the cohesion of the album. Add to that some real duds ("State of the Art" is incredibly pretentious and annoying to listen to, as is the Loot and Plunder remix of "Somebody That I used to Know") and you have an album that fails to live up to expectations.
