A mediocre debut. This can be categorized more as extreme thrash opposed to pure death metal. It's interesting to see how Cannibal Corpse evolved after this release.
The drumming is a downer of the record as it's quite repetitive and lifeless. Paul was never the best drummer in death metal, but did have some memorable moments on later albums. He rarely mixes it up on this record, playing with the hi-hat some and his awful sounding bass drum. There are few blasts to be found.
Alex Webster's bass is prominent on the album, but for the most part he just follows the guitar.
The guitar leads on this album are forgettable wank. Cannibal Corpse only has a few decent leads in their catalog, being found on albums such as The Bleeding and Vile.
The vocals here are quite different from the next 3 albums as Barnes had not found his signature style. His vocal delivery here is dry, raspy, and definitely more rooted in thrash. Barnes has a few moments on the album, one being halfway through A Skull Full Of Maggots, where he gives a throaty razor blade delivery. He also sounds pretty good on Edible Autopsy and Buried In The Backyard where he closes out the album with a short, but decent enough growl.
This album sounds quite dated and can get repetitive after a few listens. Rarely do I spin this anymore and when I do it's only for a few specific tracks.
Top 3:
Shredded Humans
A Skull Full Of Maggots
Edible Autopsy
