i think the first one has more energy and a little more punch at moments. but this is a more mature, meditative, and concise. so i think when it hits hard its something that can be felt. and because of that this is the better record. but yea it took a little while to grow

also nice review, does the album justice

finally someone who agrees that Mi Fa Mi > Synapse....

to me synapse sounds like an upgraded version of an Emery album

synapse also has moments that are just a bit too cheesy pop-punk for my tastes.

Synapse blows this out of the water. From where the record starts and where it finishes it seriously takes you by surprise. Casey leaving was definitely a bad thing. Of course this is all opinion. This album was still pretty awesome. Saturnus might be the catchiest thing I've ever heard.

"Casey was annoying in this band anyway"

In what way? Vocal-wise, I thought he shined the most.

BTHATS was my favorite album for the most part of my high school years (and is still on my top 10 list), can't believe how under-appreciated it is. Lyrics are what really stands out, especially reoccurring lines throughout different songs.

I also saw one of the guitarists on the streets of Boston and talked to him for a minute and told me that they were rehearsing recently.. so my fingers are crossed for another album, or at least another reunion show

One of my all time favourite albums. I'm still sad about every single day that they're not making music...

I swear to God everyone who likes synapse more than Mi Fa Mi must be listening to a completely different album than I am

or they have shit taste in post hardcore

I think the exact same thing for those who prefer Mi Fa Mi over Synapse. And plus, I saw your last.fm charts, don't flatter yourself with your post-hardcore tastes. Clearly you have not had the chance to appreciate BTHATS. Granted, Mi Fa Mi is a more balanced and fluid album, but Synapse truly captures the brilliance of TREOS.

There's much more passable content in BTHATS, imo. The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi demands far more of your attention, and holds it far better.

I've been a TREOS fanboy since BTHATS was released in 2005, and that's the album that holds true for me. The beautiful thing about it is that every time I listen to the album again I hear something new. It's raw, dynamic, and hard-hitting just at the right moments. Casey was definitely a huge factor in shaping the sound of the album, and you could tell by listening to The Dear Hunter, or even comparing the sound of both albums before and after he left. BTHATS at the time of release was definitely one of the more experimental and creative side that post-hardcore had to offer. Mi Fa Mi sounds a bit too polished for its own good, and sounds more like a Thrice album.

Hmm. I don't see it so much as over-produced, but more as refined, whereas BTHATS was more rough around the edges for me. There were some great parts, but there were also parts that I felt really didn't quite live up to the potential of the idea they were going for.

Both albums are 5s to me. Having a child made me appreciate this album in a whole new way.

I think it's fair to say the band has gone through enough changes to consider both our opinions reasonable. It's not so different from Kid A vs OKC, and I guess it really depends on what we want to hear from TREOS
