I've never heard this album, but the Kinks rule.

Yep it's upper echelon Kinks, not the best but definite quality.

Fantastic album; thing is, they sound absolutely convincing both on the rockers and the Brit-pop stuff. One major reason is the production, which seems more professional and elaborate (intricate distortion, rich arrangements) without losing in the spontaneity department. Another reason is that this is Ray's first highpoint as a songwriter. All of the songs have at least one great hook and his "socially conscious" lyrics are top quality. The only letdowns are "Fancy" and "You're Looking Fine", songs which just don't add anything to the table. There are better ballads than the former and better rockers than the latter to be found here.

First time listening to the Kinks. Thought the first song was The Beatles.

Pretty good review. The Kinks definitely transition here from their heavier and louder style of the first three LPs and start to go their own way. A very good example that the 60s were not only about the Beatles.

Rainy Day in June builds such a harrowing atmosphere in its verses... Those loud thunders in the chorus snap me out of it, though...
