I still give this a listen once in a while, despite the albums allure to nu-metal cliches.

i just made an acount to add this. i read the review and youre just judging single songs. you have to look at the whole album its about a mans life it starts with a happy childhood (enter the pheonix) but then depression (message in a bottle) then his anger (five) all leading to an untimely suicide (the burning red).

The production on this really stops any of the songs coming through. I'd have preffered just 4 track demos.

just recently got really into Machine Head, before was occasional listen to the Blackening. Found this in the used section for $8 at my local music store. Glad I only wasted 8 bucks, Blood Sweat Tears is good, the middle/end is what makes this album. Would be higher but can't over the A. Rap metal bs and B. the goofy look they had at the time lol.

i think the buring red song is actually very good. also five is one of the most emotionally driven songs ive heard even though musically machine head can do so much better.

This grew on me a bit, but still a 2.5 rating. And I am not a new metal boy guy by anymeans, but The Blackening blows this out of the water. Just me though.

For me this is a fun album to listen to. I bought the album on 1999, it has the sense of nu-metal, different than their debut, burn my eyes. The riffs is catchy & groovy and for me it's not a bad idea for them to try new sound at that time.
I think the reviewer doesn't mention that the song 'Message In The Bottle' is a cover song from Sting&The Police, and they cover it in a great way..
Still one of the best alternative/groove metal album

my second favourite album by them after burn my eyes; i love how they became more nu-metal oriented not losing their identity; i guess some radical changes in their style were neccessary at the time and this attempt of entering a new territory sound quite convincing to me... which is funny since i've never been into nu metal; mh made it their way and they won; btw, i really enjoy these creepy licks of solo guitar all along the album, when contrasted to crushing riffs they create a great mood;

Their first two albums and the blackening rule hard. I really like this album too although I wouldn't recommend it like the other three
