I dunno about safe necessarily. More streamlined perhaps, but I think that's actually good for Farrell in particular. Less stream of consciousness and more melody focused. Plus, I think I like older Farrell's lower register more than his younger version's caterwauling. And the rest of the band's playing is still top notch.

Dont forget the solid production by Dave stiek from TV on the Radio, a very underrated band. His work helped a lot to make a old band sounding modern. I went to a Festival years ago, where both bands where on the line-up, but unfortunately there was no colaboration.
But both bands gave great performances.
