What do you guys think of the Up the Downstairs album? Not Beautiful Anymore, Small Fish, Burning Sky and Fadeaway are some of my favorite pre-In Absentia moments.

@scissor; Now that you put a doubt in my mind I'd need to revisit their whole discog. Not tonight =P. I like very much Sky Moves Sideways though. And both their live Coma Divine and Warszawa. And certainly some scattered studio songs here or there. One thing is sure, I enjoy much more their later works as a whole. By a mile.

it's a good album if you want to be introduced to their early sound. Has a specific production that's characteristic through the whole album. It's a great record

Their new stuff is good too, I think. I'm not really sure which era I like best.

I just wrote a review for Warszawa a couple days ago. That album is a good representation of their Lightbulb Sun years. Maybe you could check out the review... see if I covered it well enough.

You know bud, I'm clearly saying this from my subjective perspective, but the real difference through these 2 eras is that after absentia the band went further and incorporated more metal elements in its sound. This led to a more refined and catchy sound that was pretty unique throughout the scene.

the pre-in absentia era was hazy and psychedelic -in my ears Wilson sounds more sincere and free in his songwriting. I don't know if it was the drugs or other things, but as you can really tell with your prog knowledge( hehehe!), he has managed to create awesome songs, inspired straight from the 60-70s' era.

Signify and Stupid dream manifest for me the ideal link between these periods. What is important though, is not their position, but their emotional load which is brilliantly delivered with music and lyrics equally

scissors,

I agree with you for the most part. Their recent work is more accessible I think. Music from the earlier albums was less linear and more free-flowing in many places.

I completely I agree with you, scissor. PT sounded much more honest during the pre-In Absentia era. Maybe it's due to the production, which was much more raw. Or maybe it's just because Chris wasn't as overpowered as Gavin. Having said that, I personally think the post-In Absentia era has been much better in terms of music.

One thing they really have going in the "post"-era is riffs. The older albums have them too, but they are used differently. Chris was a solid drummer, kinda underrated. That shows when you hear their live material from that back then.

Scissors,

Thanks. I would appreciate any feedback at all. I have never reviewed a live album before.

Definitely. I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily. Just different.

There might be more to latch on to when a song has moar riffs!

So I would give that to Jethro's perspective. There are cool moments all over the place in The Incident and FoaBP.

Yeah I can hear you, scissor, and you are right about the difference between the pre and the post Absentia, and everything. I'm aware that one has to be more patient with their earlier stuff in order to fully appreciate. I'll be sure to get into their pre-Absentia stuff in depth one day. I never did actually, shame. What I have is my (more or less random and improvised) home made 'best of' in my comp.

btw, my actual rating can only go upward since I've heard all songs at least couple of times each and so I know it's a 3.5 at a minimum.

superb review, pos.

I agree about Wilson's transition here and that's why this album didn't quite appealed to me as much as the pre-Absentia (Absentia included) PT albums that followed it.

On the other hand, i didn't give the album the needed amount of listening sessions, so there's a good chance of bumping the rating upward in the future.
