I'm actually very impressed by your review. Although I stand by my opinions expressed in my own review of this album, you did a very good job with you review.

I find it odd when people say they can't hear the bass in pretty much anything. I can hear it easily in pretty much any well produced music.

I dissagree with you on your negative points and here's why:

James LaBrie: He really does have an amazing voice and his range is out of this world. I admit that I didn't like his voice at first, but it has grown on me and I really think it compliments the music really well.

Songwriting: Ah, the common misconception about DT. I, for one, think that they write BRILLIANT songs...the older they get, the more wanking, I agree, but I think the songs on this album are just brilliant. Musicially, every song is amazing, and yes, I dont really enjoy the saxaphone solo in "Another Day", but I give them credit for trying something new. But seriously, every song on this album is just brilliant musicially. Lyrically, I think its top shelf as well. Just read the lyrics for "Learning to Live" and "Metropolis"...they are pretty bad ass and very deep. I really do belive they really combine the wankering and the songwriting skills VERY well on this album. Later albums, I really tend to agree with you there, ESPECIALLY 6DOIT (to me, all the solo shit ruined a great song like Blind Faith)
By the way, lyrically, this who wrote all the songs:
Pull Me Under - Kevin Moore
Another Day - John Pertucci
Take the Time - The Whole Band (its in the writing credits)
Metropolis - John Pertucci
Surrounded - Kevin Moore
Under a Glass Moon - John Pertucci
Wait For Sleep - Kevin Moore
Learning to Live - John Myung

As a bassist, I tend to agree with Myung being overshadowed, but I think his playing on this album is pretty cystal clear. Espeically on Metropolis, but he is really awesome on "Under a Glass Moon" and "Learning to Live". Later on, espeically after Awake, he did start getting tuned out, but not here.

I liked your review, but even with your points, I dont think this album deserves a 2. For me, its a 4.5-5, but I can see why people have it hover around the 3 range...

Different strokes for different folks man

this is the album that i would listen to indivisual songs, not the album front to back. but for this reason i like this album jsut becuase of songs like take the time, metropolis, and learning to live. all great songs.

I'm going to neg this, not because I think you're wrong (I do) but because I don't think you justified your rating well at all. This album is fairly well regarded, and to give it a 2 by saying 'These guys are bad songwriters' isn't good enough. I don't think the trusty 'good/bad' format was a good choice for this particular review. More detail, please.

You can neg me, but I did go beyond just saying that they were bad songwriters. I explained how they didn't balance their song progression with their technical aspects in the songs, thus making them difficult to listen to. Obviously you didn't read the review well enough.

I don't think this is a very good review. You don't give enough valid points to warrant such a low rating.

Ok, you don't like LaBrie's voice. I don't see why not; he hits the pitches, it's distinctive, the lyrics are generally of a high caliber.. but whatever.

Alright, you you don't like the technical elements. Fine. I don't think you should say that the band "tries to impress the listener", however. Maybe they feel that the technicality, like the great instrument playing and off-kilter arrangements, makes their music unique and fun to listen to. Maybe they wanted to stand apart from the billion other bands who play a couple power chords in 4/4 time. I think that you saying that the band just shows off is a false analysis. You should take it for what it is, and what it is is part of the style of music that they play. To top it off your avatar is the new Into Eternity album. 'Nuff said? I think so.

You say that if you want a easy to listen to, simple album, stay away. Well that's splendid. So you rated this album based on the assumption that the reader would only be interested in simple, uncomplicated music.

Great album, great band. The songwriting on this album is superb, and the flak that it gets for being overly technical is totally unwarranted in my opinion.

He has never said such things. There is a big difference in being complex and just wank the fretboard and use the different time signatures for the sake of sounding "weird".

I myself listen very much to progressive rock/progressive metal and technical death metal. I really don't like these guys. And no, their lyrics are not deep and intelligent, at least not on their older albums.

I feel like there just wasn't enough in the review period. One of those not enough information situations...

not so much as to deserve a neg, but...not warranting a pos either

I don't get a 2 from this review...More like a 3 or 3.5. It is still well written though, and i respect your opinion. This band is not for everyone, although i love them

i just listened to this front to back(or attempted to for most of it) and pretty much agree with the review. the song writing just doesnt match up to other progressive bands like Opeth or Porcupine Tree, who dont use half the technical abilities demonstrated yet write beautiful songs that flow extremely well. and the vocals are just so off-putting. i guess they are talented, but i just find it hard to even listen to em for a song or 2. those really are the only 2 major flaws but the are MAJOR flaws, as in they tank the enjoyability and overall rating of the album quite possibly to a 2.
