"This album is definitely something to pick apart and analyze almost as a sociological study for those familiar with Dream Theater, given what has happened. The results explain (to me) why the music is so epic'"

jybt, a well written review, including many points i agree with... however, 2 arguments i have with almost every review i've read of ADToE, including yours: 1) some of the production elements of the drums may be questionable (ie. too quiet), but mike mangini is absolutely masterful, both from technical and creative standpoints. i'm not sure what others are hearing or not hearing in his playing, but as a drummer of 31 years, it's plain to me that on this album the depth of complexity of the song structures is greater than on most of their previous compositions. that people have accused mangini of sounding bland should probably be taken as a huge compliment: most drummers, including mike portnoy, would sound like they were falling down stairs if they tried to play these songs. i love portnoy, but mangini eats portnoy for breakfast. 2) hardly anyone even mentions "breaking all illusions". the song is a masterpeice. it is somehow able to be stylistically diverse and concise and flowing all at once, and is simply 12 of the most tastefully dense moments the band has committed to recording. i believe this song and "on the backs of angels" are close to perfect.

Breaking All Illusions is a great track, but it's a little difficult to pass off the longest song off a Dream Theater release as "concise"...

well, to my ears, the song feels very efficient in getting to the places it goes... and the more i listen to the album, there is a trend in general that i find refreshing, in terms of not beating ideas to death. and it doesn't always directly line up with song length... from their last album, i thought a nightmare to remember , at 16 minutes, took way too long to say way too little, but i thought the count of tuscany was beautifully arranged and well paced at over 19 minutes. you're right though, dream theater doesn't really do concise. it's all relative, i guess.

Remember that 'award' that Rolling Stone gave Rush for Worst Lyrics? That should have gone right here.

The worst lyrics by Dt were either on Wither or TCoT, wowie. But jybt great review again, just a liittle on the lengthy side but since you like analysing a lot, and probably since you like DT I can imagine you had a lot to write about. Not a big fan of the album though, it has its moments but it's time for DT to move out from their comfort zone again. But Jordan definitely plays the largest and most interesting role on the album, though it's sadly not enough to save this album from being generic DT imo.
