"he worshipped these rappers and is therefore influenced by these rappers. if bjork listened to nothing but 2pac for the next year and then recorded an album, would she sound like 2pac? no. would she be influenced by 2pac's sound? yes"
Hence it would be incorrect to say of that album (if it existed), "any fan of 2Pac is sure to enjoy this"

out of curiosity what do you dislike about this album? you're an anomaly to me cause i have found and
believe i still will find that anyone who enjoyed mainstream '90s rap will enjoy this record.
the bjork example doesn't work for that statement (it was in response to your retarded porn star
statement), but i still stand by it

I didn't mean for this to turn into some sort of argument, the point is that the "any fan of..." statement is referring to so vague and broad a category that it becomes meaningless.
I don't have any problem with Kendrick, he's cool, but I can't listen to an album if I vehemently hate the production. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is, but the modernity and I guess "electronic" feel I get from it. They don't sound like BEATS to me, they're little productions that someone is rapping over. There's no momentum. Were there any hard snares on this album? If there were I don't recall them. It's just these intangible vibes of harmlessness and softness I guess that really got me.
As soon as a great beat comes on, like the HiiiPower beat, I'm suddenly interested and I like what he's going for. That being said, HiiiPower has a bad chorus and the woman singing is totally unnecessary so even then I can't fully enjoy it.

fair points. 'any fan of' is a bit of a blanket statement, but when making definitive statements, something reviewers have to do, we're always walking a line here. and given the likable beats and the fact that i see him targeting audience being fans of that era (this isn't new-age rap, even though it has some newer elements), i felt it a reasonable extension to make. after all, if i said, if you like '90s mainstream rap, you'll probly like this, that statement is essentially pointless.
clearly you disagree and you're entitled to, but that porn star statement was pretty poorly reasoned.

Yeah, totally valid. It's the people that say "hip hop died with Biggie and 2Pac" who will really latch on to this. I think something better to say than "fans of 90s mainstream rap" is "people who have lost faith in hip hop since the new millennium arrived".
Ok the porn star thing didn't really work but the point stands that influence =/= fans of one will like the other

Good review. And yeah, I agree that any attention given to this is good. Glad to see this getting (mostly) love around here.

equating this to old school hip hop isn't too terribly far off the mark. Certainly closer than trap-hop, modern-midwest/west/east/south or club-rap sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Thanks, you nailed my feelings perfectly.
I love 90s hip-hop, and somehow I just can't get into this at all, and lord knows I've tried. I know I'm in the minority, but this is just boring to me.

disagree cause it kinda shows how he's being viewed in the community, but i'd be intrigued to hear your point elaborated.
closer than trap-hop, modern-midwest/west/east/south or club-rap

Great review. Just started listening to this and I'm already totally captivated by the beats, particularly the first track, Fuck Your Ethnicity. If this is Dr. Dre's next major solo artist project, well, I can't fucking wait to see what those two can make together. Just as soon as that motherfucker drops Detox first.
Damn, this is just what I've been looking for. Something with the energy and fun of the Odd Future crew but with the intelligent, emotional lyrics of a Kanye or Cudi.
