I didn't mean for this to turn into some sort of argument, the point is that the "any fan of..." statement is referring to so vague and broad a category that it becomes meaningless.

I don't have any problem with Kendrick, he's cool, but I can't listen to an album if I vehemently hate the production. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is, but the modernity and I guess "electronic" feel I get from it. They don't sound like BEATS to me, they're little productions that someone is rapping over. There's no momentum. Were there any hard snares on this album? If there were I don't recall them. It's just these intangible vibes of harmlessness and softness I guess that really got me.

As soon as a great beat comes on, like the HiiiPower beat, I'm suddenly interested and I like what he's going for. That being said, HiiiPower has a bad chorus and the woman singing is totally unnecessary so even then I can't fully enjoy it.

'any fan of' is a bit of a blanket statement, but when making definitive statements, something reviewers have to do, we're always walking a line here. and given the likable beats and the fact that i see him targeting audience being fans of that era (this isn't new-age rap, even though it has some newer elements), i felt it a reasonable extension to make. after all, if i said, if you like '90s mainstream rap, you'll probly like this, that statement is essentially pointless.

Great review. Just started listening to this and I'm already totally captivated by the beats, particularly the first track, Fuck Your Ethnicity. If this is Dr. Dre's next major solo artist project, well, I can't fucking wait to see what those two can make together. Just as soon as that motherfucker drops Detox first.
