Listening to this again now. Easily the best vocal performance John has given.

He is a hell of a vocalist. The lack of cleans here bothered me though.

I fucking love this album. It may be my favorite Agalloch yet. Anxiously awaiting the vinyl.

where would they have fit in on any of the songs here?

I'm not saying they would've fit in, I'm just saying I love his clean vocals and they've always been a strong point for me.

I love how this album completely defied everyones expectations. That's probably why it got poor reviews around here, but who really gives a damn?

Three '4's and one '2.5' is pretty good if you ask me.
My problem with it other than the length is that it came off as a mix of the previous three in one new, bleak package. The others all felt original. Still like this, though.

You're right. But 3.8 is pretty poor compared to the rest of their albums. Also, it seemed to get a better response from other sources. Also, i feel like this one is quite unique. It might feel odd because its not the album you expected them to release, but I don't think it sounds much like any of their previous releases.

Black metal influence on PF + acoustic passages on The Mantle + 'post' sections on AATG - originality + water = MOTS
That's how I see it. Still a good album, and you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but this could've been a lot better I think.

Thanks for the responses guys! It's all subjective to the listener of course. Some people like the instant gratification they get with albums like Ashes and Pale Folklore. Others simply like the aural aesthetic of their earlier works. As for me, I'm more of an "album listener" than a "song listener". I simply can't be bothered to listen to just one song here and there. When I sit down to listen to music, I have to listen to an entire album by a band before I can move on. I always judge a band based on how their whole album feels, not just a few songs.
I'm probably in a small minority here, but that's just the way I listen to music. There's nothing right or wrong about anybody's methods, but these sort of things can lead somebody to not like some albums and love others. At least that's the way I see it. With Marrow, you can't just pull any old song from the album and just listen to it at random (except maybe Ghosts). I have to hear the song before it, the intro, the song after it. Before I know it I just listened to the whole album again. This has been happening pretty much non-stop since I snagged it on release day last year.

None of Agalloch's albums gave me 'instant gratification', they were cool on first listen but especially Ashes Against The Grain took quite a while to sink in. Took me a lot of listens before I was able to understand the true genius of that album.

Really? I've always thought Ashes was easily the most instantly appealing albums of all their
releases. It really grabs you by the balls with huge, in your face guitars and massive riffs. It has
this old-school rock album feel for me, but with that classic Agalloch feel. I feel like most of
their catchiest songs are on that album.
This is another reason why Agalloch will always be a timeless, untouchable band. Every album
somebody hears and grabs from it something different. I don't think I'll ever be able to pick a
favorite album. I love all of them, but for different reasons. Pale Folklore as a pioneer of an
album, and a damn good first release. The Mantle for it's post-rock and ambient deviations, an
experimental and folky masterpiece. Ashes for it's balls to the wall, rock infused folk/black metal.
Everything about that album is big up until Blackbirds, quite possibly the best song ever written.
And Marrows for it's unrelenting cold and melancholic atmosphere, and an unexpected direction for
the band in terms of sound and songwriting. It's all good!
