Well, I'm glad you did remove the rust because this review is one of my favorites in a while (read: ever). It should get featured on principle.

I have to admit that comment of yours on my Mulan review when you first said how much you loved The Lion King soundtrack was extra inspiration to get the job done and, more importantly, do it right. I'm glad to hear that I appear to have succeeded and that folks have been reasonably entertained =)
@ Hood: It should get featured on principle.
That would honestly make my life.

Great review Irving, seriously.

"depicted as malicious and underhanded to further underscore his difference from the “rest of us” in “normal” society."
Unlike a classic antagonist huh?
Great write up Irving.
POS of course.

The Lion King is like the 36 Chambers of all Disney Movies. "NAAAA SADAVENYA!"
|
| |
is it weird that I enjoy Elton John's work with Road to Eldorado more?
|
| |
Goddamn Irv, you're the only thing that ever makes me want to watch disney movies anymore....
well that, and Jonny Depp as a pirate.

Again, I still believe that the racial, political, and socioeconomic connotations are noted, but rather irrelevant considering children do not interpret such elements (conciously or subconciously) in anywhere near the same way as a adult psychologist/analyst with an agenda. It would be interesting to see the moral benefits (discovery, independence, ethical awareness, self-responsibility) such children's movies have in contrary to the elements you mention. Your idea of Mufasa being a whore is just in the reality of a lion tribe, even if some realities are circumvented (portrayal of Hyenas) by the designers. Rafiki being some sort of creep would work well in a stand up routine, but in seriousness seems like you're trying to roll the gold too much.
It's hard, as an adult, to see the world with a child's eyes, which is why the premise for all of thses ideas are borderline farsical to me. I'd challange you to find any children's movie that didn't utlise stereotypes to push a storyline, and I'd further challange the significance of their affect in later life. I'd also challange you to not contort the visual aspects in scenes in reference to contraversial historical events or other inuendos. Is it, that as adults we still try to turn a cloud into the shape of a dog?
Don't get me wrong, your review is excellent, I just question much of the concepts and observations which you preface. I question the ability of an adult to look at a scene, see a shape/object/design and view it objectively, as a child would see it.

"I still think the scene where simba's dad plunges to his death is too extreme for kids. I know it bothered me."
Well after all the implied bestiality in Beauty and The Beast...that scenes really not too big of a deal.
|
| |
The scene when Mufasa plunges to his death is indeed very hard to watch, even as a child. Thankfully, it's not so much that event that shapes Simba's outcome; it's his willingness to rediscover his responsiblity as a leader through his father's legacy.
I remember seeing B&tB at like 4 or something, and the only time I was made aware of the marginal (yet crude) connection was when I read the Wikipedia article for it and read the contraversy section - it took Wiki to make me aware of the ridiculous idea that some psychoanalyst conjured up in their home office. It's not like all the kids who saw it are now out and about engaging in animal sex.
