Oh come on Noctus this isn't THAT bad.
|

This review is REALLY fanboy-esque and eh. But while the frontman of this band IS a pretentious douche, they really have made some fantastic black metal. Probably the best BM release of the year, I'm considering raising this to a 4.5.
Blackened hipster metal

gabethepiratesquid yes! I welcome such responses. as I've said, you have to look past "like" and "sort of" statements in his interview, this is not "judge a person" but "judge an album" page and I'm tired of people judging HHH and actually, to a degree, me as well.

Pink Fluffy Bear...
No No I like Pink Fluffy Bears I'm pretty sure...

Not even close
Pretty close.
Better than Ash Borer anyway. On par with Deafheaven in my mind.

You see, when you look at me all you see is a PFB (pink fluffy bear) but there's more to it than just
this. Same with this band. Actually I will embrace this avatar and it shall become a statement to all
those who oppose Liturgy.

and I can understand this not being someone's cup of tea, but...1.5? Really? You think they did absolutely nothing that was remotely at least creative or enjoyable in this album whatsoever? That's idiotically low.

it's like black metal with no sense of structure, emotion or anything likable at all, just silly pretension :[

this guy made up a fucking genre name for his band lol. he wrote a "transcendental metal manifesto" or whatever. he said this: "For me the meaning of black metal has something to do with a longing for ecstatic annihilation, a perfect void. An obliteration that brings about purity. The absolute, impossible, contradictory limit. Whether this transcendent realm is a cosmic unity or a silent void, and whether those things are different, I’m not sure."
sounds like a pretentious idiot.

we don't use blast beats, we use burst beats, they AFFIRM THE VOID!! :]

No structure? One of the main points is the math-rock influence structure that the band is based around.
and by "lack of emotion" you mean, "lack of CORPSE PAINT SINGING ABOUT SATAN AND NIHILISM AND 666" because Mayhem was so full of genius emotion like that.
and if an album is pretentious, that usually means it incorporates some level of musicianship to consider itself pretentious with. Pretentiousness =/= bad music, that's just an air music can have. That's just like saying an album is bad because they produced it to make money instead of blahblahblah musical integrity.
