Not only do Twin Atlantic sound like Biffy Clyro, but now they face the same backlash as their fellow Scot rockers, since ‘Free’ dials down the unique quirkiness of their superb prior release ‘Vivarium’. Such refinement sees the Glasgow quartet produce some anthemic choruses that are destined for arena sing-alongs, with Sam McTrusty’s distinctively thick accent leading the way. Gil Norton’s wall of noise production could use a little more subtlety & it’s a tad overlong, but ‘Free’ is ultimately a consistent LP whose diversity plays out on subsequent listens. Recommended Tracks: Free, Time For You to Stand Up, Edit Me & The Ghost of Eddie.

The problems I have with this are 1) it lacks the 'angular' nature of Vivarium, the thing that made them stand out in the first place and 2) too many of the choruses just rely on Sam's huge vocals without much actual melody ie 'so I could be freeeeeeeeeeee', 'away away, awayaaaaaaaaaaaayayay', 'I want it aaaaaaaaaaaaaall', 'I wanted to laugh it oooooooooooooooff, I want to forget that i got cauuuuuuuuuuuuught'

Point 1 is definitely correct. I'd argue point 2 a little in that I just think the melodies are more mainstream sounding... But they are there.
I can definitely see why people think this is a significant step down (& it is a step down), but it's still pretty darn enjoyable for me. Then again, it could just be that I like the Scottish accent in the vocals.

I'm not even finished listening and I can tell it's a 4, okay? Since I love all of this. Since I
pretty much just love anything with a wall of guitar sound and that's in here so.
And a lot of nice everything else all the time as well. The guy's voice too of course.
This is actually the only band I've seen live. So glad this doesn't suck.

Agree with most of the reviewers. Vivarium was much more fun, but still a 3.

I think 'Make A Beast of Myself' is easily the best song on here. Great sound, great lyrics, and it's stuck in my head for days after I hear it. I could see this getting a 4

Personally disagree with the review, this has swiftly become one of my favourite albums.
It's a bit too long and they could have cut out a couple of songs, sure, but there are some gems on here.
'Make A Beast Of Myself' - 'Free' - 'Yes I Was Drunk' - 'Time To Stand Up' - 'Crash Land' et al.
Fantastic album, in my opinion.
Some of the rhyming on 'Yes I Was Drunk' is atrocious though!

Listened to this again after avoiding it for months. Enjoyed it a lot more this time, probably because I've accepted what it is and not what I wanted it to be. Will probably bump the score up .5.

I really wish this was as good as Vivarium. It has some good tracks but it isn't as original.
