I bet this will end up averaging at a high 80 again on Metacritic and everyone will complain it's too 'boring' for them. =)

Honestly, ratings are fairly superficial at the end of the day. I'm really interested to see reviews about the record. I never expected to be so taken with the album's lyrics..
And Irving, you flatter me greatly. I'm still hoping to see a formatted criticism of one of my reviews someday. =)

The lyrics for folk music has always been of high standard so, I expect to be blown off my feet. =)

There's a reason why you haven't had one yet - despite my reading each and every one of your reviews. I honestly just can't find enough faults to justify writing such a comment. Damn you =S

I saw the npr stream yesterday and pondered how long it would take before the first review - which good by the way. This album is a monster when it comes to trying to label it. I will probably review it in the next couple weeks but so far the 3 weeks I've had it have not been enough.

great review conrad... you sure know how to keep 'em interesting, seriously.
I was pretty ambivalent towards Fleet Foxes' last, and this one has yet to really catch my attention as well.
|
| |
I was hoping this would be good. I just barely got their Self Titled and I've been digging it.

The shrine / an argument is easily the best fleet foxes song to date

That sax solo at the end is incredible. There are a ton of people on last.fm who hate it, though. They're clearly a bunch of philistines. Clearly.
Thanks, Eric!

do you like this better than their last?

There's always only a couple fleet foxes songs that really capture my attention. Closer on this is really great.

I think I do, Eric. Part of that might just be a reaction to my finding the first record a bit overhyped - but like I said in the review, this feels more flawed than the debut and it's all the better for it.
|
| |
I definitely understand that feeling of something flawed being more human and therefore better in ways... best personified by my relationship with In The Aeroplane Over the Sea... but I think that's always something I've applied to releases that I've listened to many times.
I thought their self-titled was far from perfect, though.

So this is a brother to Forgiveness Rock Record?

Well, for me, a "perfect" album is one in which you wouldn't change anything. I can't find anything in Fleet Foxes to objectively criticize - yet it leaves me wanting something more. I guess that's a criticism in itself, but I'm looking at it from a slightly more technical angle in a sense.
|
| |
that makes sense... I rarely (not sure if I ever have) take that angle when judging an album but I can see how it would be much more natural for you to than me, who's never played an instrument outside of the snare drum in elementary school haha.

damn, nice review conrad. though i've gotta kindly disagree on the rating.
forgot streams counted as legit sources too! I've had my helplessness blues review written up for close to two weeks now... guess i'll submit that sucker as soon as my computer stops dying.
