I'm not holding out for another Miserable at Best, but Terrible Things tries so hard for the same effect and fails Miserable-y.

It sounds like they're saying "Anberlin" too Snipe.
Disagree Adam. There is no doubt that there is a bit of a try hard factor in it (only to be expected when it's still predominantly the same band), but the subject matter is different, the climax clearly different & if you completely forgot about Lancaster, then the vocals are actually pretty good.

The lyrics are terrible and the music is predictable and stale.

"The Music is predictable & stale". The piano line is not all that dissimilar to Miserable At Best. So I presume you're saying it's more of a timing issue?
Miserable At Best's lyrics were more focused on a former love. Terrible Things lyrics are concerning love in general, parenthood, death, etc... Maybe it's an empathy issue. Don't make me go into my 'The Suburbs' speech again. You are out of your teens, aren't you?

Yes, of course. But it's in the phrasing, man.

I will admit it's a bit (for want of a better word) lumpy in its phrasing, but you have to remember that many people thought the same about 'Miserable At Best'. Was it Alex (or another staff member) who thought 'MAB' was the worst song he ever heard. So yeah, I'm thinking it's all in the ear & heart of the listener. As I always say, to each their own.

I must say, that song did make me think of an infamous review which was up on Sputnik at one stage.

Jared, I'm so disappointed in you mate. I really thought you'd provide me with some staff back-up on this type of stuff, but you've just been sucked into the metal black hole.

Naa Davey they definitely went downhill after Romantics, and I'm pretty sure this isn't that great without listening to it but I'll give it a fair shot sometime.

That's what I meant DiceMan. They have only released 1 album after Romantics.
And yeah, I like my 3.5's. Although I did give Go Radio's newie a 4.

Anywhere But Here was fucking atrocious lyrically, and for the most part, musically. I don't think they can ever top A Lesson In Romantics. I heard this new EP and only liked the 'Jamie All Over' acoustic. Everything else was boring. Go Radio it is...

Interested to know which version of 'Kids In Love' you prefer...

Good review as always Davey, but I gotta disagree with you on this. Especially on your bromance with the track "Terrible Things". I looked it up hoping to hear a beautiful ballad that leads into an aspiring ending with the full band, but I found the song incredibly weak and unoriginal. Too bad...
