It's supposed to be depressing. You're probably refering to "Closer", or "The Hand That Feeds".

Nah, it wasn't either of those.

I just named the two that have received radio play. But yeah, this is an essential listen. It'll probably be offensive to you the first couple of plays, at least it was for me.
|
| |
musta been "Hurt"
|
| |
Hurt is the best song here, as much as people want to bitch about it.
|

OMG yes! I can't even count the amount of times if heard people say "Downward Spiral is a good album except it's ruined by Hurt"
people are constantly bitching about that track, I'm sure Trent regrets ever writing it

all i know is that trent acknowledged that johnny cash's version is better.

You know you're actually a hell of a reviewer

Id imagine most artists would have "acknowledged" the same thing in a similar situation, regardless of which is really better.

if "similar situation" = being covered by a motherfucking legend, then yeah

The review was very concise and well thought-out, but perhaps it could have been a litttttle more specific with names of songs and whatnot. Good tie in to society, though. I support!
And as for "Hurt": Comparing Cash's lyrical change to Reznor's, Reznor's character wears a 'crown of shit' - not 'thorns' - because there are many instances in TDS of the character transforming himself into a god in his own mind on his path to self-destruction, and he realizes he's just as false as the deity(ies) he rejected earlier (the Christian god, the female embodiment, etc.). Or something like that :P. I feel Cash simply sung 'crown of thorns' instead because he felt he had suffered and had been a martyr for his values, and perhaps 'crown of shit' was too tasteless for him.
And I don't get the feeling that Trent Reznor regrets writing "Hurt" - as he once said when I saw them live before performing the song, it had its place of origin in a bedroom during a dark time of his life, and he was so grateful to sing it to an audience and have it be welcomed with open arms.

Trent doesn't regret Hurt. He loves to play it when the crowd aren't being assholes.

" I know I used to like a few songs by NIN but I can't for the life of me remember what they are. "
Jesus, you are so young.
"who bitches about hurt? mr. self destruct ftw"
Whole album ftw JS.
"all i know is that trent acknowledged that johnny cash's version is better."
I like both versions equally. They have two completely different moods and a different story plays out in my mind based on which version I listen to. That being said I'm way less burnt out on JC's version.
