Definitely not their best album, but far from being a bad one. Entertaining throughout.

Apart from a couple of naff songs, this seriously is one of their best albums. Certainly better than
the complete tosh of "Topographic Oceans".
Squire's bass is prominent throughout and is absolutely superb on some songs, especially "Silent
Wings".
However, what sets this album apart is Howe's frenetic soloing throughout the first 3 or 4 songs.
Always tasteful and interesting and makes the songs so unique and special.
There are enough gold nuggets on this album to make it a truly worthwhile addition to their
collection.

If yes had to move out of their classic prog phase . . . I wish they had done another album like Tormato while they still
had some life in them—before they totally drowned in the pop/rock of 90125 and Big Generator.

"Certainly better than the complete tosh of "Topographic Oceans""
I don't know, man, Tales had consistency flaws, but it still had a lot of awesome, tasty prog moments.
Tales is interesting because of its more experimental nature, whereas this is just pretty bland
because it sounds like a band that is "unsure of themselves musically" (as Howe stated)
|
| |
one of the few albums where the production literally bugs me, seems to be more grating in prog for some reason
|
| |
uh oh, don't lose it fripper
