I guess, although it would be difficult to improve tracks like "Heresy" and "Ruiner". If anything, this album has put Nine Inch Nails' entire catalog back in my rotation. I'm talking 110 plays this week on last.fm.

I don't think it sounds dated, but it would definitely be cool with a bit more of a modern sound.
You're kidding...

To put it in a bit of context, I'm not the biggest NIN fan. I only really like their debut and Broken. I like the radio tracks from The Downward Spiral, but otherwise couldn't care less. I think with a bigger sound that it could regain my attention... it's just a personal opinion from a very casual NIN fan.

Fair enough. It was somewhat presumptuous of me to think that you'd love NIN's industrial sound. For me, The Downward Spiral is conceptually and musically perfect - Trent captured the destruction of a man so well. I've been really getting into a lot of concept records lately, but that one in particular stands out and I'm not even a big NIN fan. What were the radio hits from The Downward Spiral?

Closer and Hurt.

Everyone I've spoken to in real life who knows of both Johnny Cash and NIN seem to think that "Hurt" was written by Cash. Also - I thought for sure that "March Of The Pigs" was a single.

Don't get me started on this point. People are retarded.

I guess it was the first single and Hurt wasn't one at all, although it definitely received radio play as the album took off to the status it has now.

"March of the Pigs" was the album's first single, but obviously not the biggest. I like those three songs a lot, and maybe one or two others a little less. I like my industrial a little more mechanical and electronic. If it's going to be catchy and mainstream I prefer that it go all the way (i.e. Stabbing Westward, God Lives Underwater, The Hunger, etc).

I think "Heresy" is the best track on The Downward Spiral myself. I could throw that on repeat all day.

I know, it really is frustrating, and they always assert themselves so well, as though they know without a shadow of a doubt that they're right. I wonder if it's because people just regard Cash as the better of the two, but his version has received more radio play
I like my industrial a little more mechanical and electronic.
I'm not really that well versed in the genre, but I've loved most of what I've heard so far; surprisingly enough, I think I dislike the vast majority of NIN's work. I've heard of Stabbing Westward more than once now, so I think I might check them out next.

If you check out Stabbing Westward start with Darkest Days and then move to Ungod. Just don't hit their self-titled until last because it's total alt. rock.

Okay, duly noted. Thanks Trey.

Excellent review. This remaster bumped PHM up to my third favorite NIN album, it has a lot more bite than it used to and I think the weaker songs on the original are the ones that get the most benefit from the remaster.

Listening to it right now and it is a vast improvement. I'm glad you reviewed it as I was unaware of it even coming out.

@Gyromania
It depends on what you are wanting to go toward. If you want more of a pop sound stabbing has some good stuff and I agree with what Willie says but if you want to go heavier I would lean more to:
KMFDM - Xtort
Ministry - The Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste or Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs
Pitchshifter - Infotainment?
Klute - Excel and Explicit
Skinny Puppy - Too Dark Park
NIN - Broken
All of these groups have multiple "good" albums but these are all about the same time frame as this album.

Great review. NIN's best album IMO, "Sin" is one of my favorite songs.

I don't think The Downward Spiral is dated at all. In comparison to the original PHM sounds horrible to his other work. I haven't heard the remaster of The Downward Spiral, but of the all the albums he has left that is the only one I'd think could be touched up a bit and possibly sound even better.
