I HIGHLY doubt that Chevelle sounded anything like they do now back then. Deftones were just a touring band until Adrenaline.

Deftones has Maynard on Passenger.. so yeah. Besides, Deftones has more expansive influences, such as Jawbox, Helmet, and The Cure.

Deftones took from Helmet more than anything in the early days.

Yeah, while Deftones took influence from Tool I wouldn't really say they sound alike, theres too much other stuff going on.

Deftones (usually) focus more on emotion and atmosphere.

Tool focuses more on instrumentation, just like any prog band.

How does it not work? Progressive rock/metal has always been a genre.

Progressive is basically just being more complex, especially when it comes to time signatures. Yes, it does expand from the verse/chorus aspect, but it's different from experimental bands that truly expand genres.

They are in a way. I don't know. The word progressive seems to emphasize how their songs progress within themselves rather than progressing a genre.

The songs expand within themselves. I seriously think that's what it is. Deftones definitely have progressive elements, but are much more of an experimental band.

Have elements of it. They definitely expanded the genre.

What, fromtheinside, your argument lends itself to calling Deftones progressive because they are continuously progressing their own sound and influences.
