After seeing them compared to Vampire Weekend with a string section, that's all I can think of now when I hear them lol

And indiechick, there are lots of people who like indie here. You just haven't ran across them yet I guess.

This is quite a shift from the debut. I like both. I prefer the energy of Rhumb Line, however I think there is a lot to enjoy with repeated listens of the new album. More subtle hooks, much better vocals and as the (good) review points out- better integration of the strings. Sometimes a follow up album that is more mid-tempo, after a lively debut, can turn people off. However, I think this album is a "grower". Current fave track is Foolish.

and yeah this is definitely better than the debut, but I don't know how much better. I'd probably only rate it a 3 or something right now

Not as immediate or ultimately as memorable as the band’s debut LP, Ra Ra Riot return with another solid & enjoyable album of strings-heavy indie-pop on ‘The Orchard’. More of a rewarding grower, this release sees the Syracuse based sextet display subtler & richer details which better utilizes the full band. This should assist their future growth, but in isolation, leaves ‘The Orchard’ feeling a little too lethargic & lacking in hooks. The highlights here are still very good, it is just that the average mid-section & closer expose a relative lack of depth. Recommended Tracks: Too Dramatic, Boy, Kansai & Do You Remember.

and went down in the middle

"10. Keep It Quiet" was the perfect ending
