I agree with the reviewer that some people really want to narrowly define music, I think this may have started in the 90s. But what it should really be about is the music and not trying to reduce the music according to genre or sub-genre criteria. Musicians end up pandering to this limited approach from audience and critics and it results in some really dull music.
And being perfect on an instrument (including vocals) isn't the only sign of music being musical, musical creativity can go beyond that. There are different ways of expressing that's why there are different kinds of music.

Sorry to be that guy, but MC5, Stooges, and VU werent all kindred bands, they werent even involved in the same scene. MC5 precursed the Stooges, and the VU were active before Stooges formed and were from NYC, not from Detroit. Also, Kinks/Yardbirds ect were DEFINITELY not influences for this album or the Stooges in general, try Howlin' Wolf, Free Jazz, and garage rock (sonics ect).

Easily the best rock album ever made (only Highway 61 Revisited could be viewed as better)

does anyone know whether it's worth getting the CD remaster of this, as in, does it sound
significantly better than the original?

I have listened to both versions and i didn't notice any great difference. Buy the remaster version only if there are any extra available tracks.

Furioso. It's beginning with Down in the street, kind of violent recovery of Out in the Street. 1970(I feel alright) and the eponymous song Fun House are just crazy, thanks to an amazing saxophone. We can't forget Hot Rats (Zappa) and Bitches Brew(Davis), released the same year, as strong as the musical anarchy hard at work in Fun House.

Furioso. Listen to this is like destroying a brick wall with a trowel. Down in the street seems a hard recovery of Out in Street in the first Who's album. The three last songs are just crazy, 1970, the eponymous Fun House and the LA Blues, amazing, thanks to the saxophone. This musical anarchy is quite similar to Hots Rats and Bitches Brew, released the same year, and it's not the worst comparison we could make with.
