Amazing review here. Posd.
I'll still check this out but my expectation is now lower

"8 Bit Baby" is worse than a Michael Cera movie.

Excision is amazing.
The review is amazing.
Skream is mediocre.

I don't think I've ever heard a DJ record that can match up to any average instrumental artist. I've noticed a common theme with these DJ records. They're never that good.

yeah, the only one that springs to mind is some of dillinja's stuff. i think it works the opposite way, instrumentalists get famous and become DJ's, i can never think of an exception to that rule.

DeadMau5 is my favorite of all the DJ's.

Joel Zimmerman doesn’t like being called a DJ. The 28-year-old dance music phenomenon from Toronto, better known as Deadmau5, rolls his eyes a the description, which he sees as a hopelessly outdated way of describing what he does. His sets are closer to live performances. He plays mostly his own material, assembling tracks on the fly, using cutting edge computer technology, including software he’s helped write himself. “There are no CDs involved,” he explains. “It’s a technological orgy up there and I try and keep it more my music than anyone else’s. If people come out to see Deadmau5 I want them to hear Deadmau5 music.”

Honestly, I didn't want to call him a DJ. I like him because he isn't really a DJ. He is an electronic artist. The title doesn't mean much more to me than highlighting that it's him alone making the music.

what do you actually mean by this? as in what do you qualify as a 'DJ' and what do you qualify as an instrumental artist? are all electronic artists 'dj's' or what?

A bit convoluted isn't it? Rusko and anything dubstep is what I would consider "DJ". Daft Punk, Justice, Deadmau5 are not.

right so do you even know what you're talking about?

Dubstep, live or otherwise, is fucking shit. They just stand at a computer, sounds real fucking hard.

You don't think you're romanticizing his 'craft' a little bit too much? If he played every single
instrument or sang every note he sampled, then I'd be a lot more impressed.

youre absolutely right, of course, thats exactly how it works

Anything dubstep ey ?
Daft Punk, Deadmau5 and Justice and dubstep artists are all producers. They produce their own music, it's only live when theres more of a difference, and Justice and Daft Punk do DJ sets themselves.
I hate the way people throw the term DJ around with no fucking comprehension as to what it means. Your regular bloke at your local club spinning records or CDs is a DJ, dubstep artists really aren't.
Oh and the last 4 songs on this are amazing.

you're one of those musically ignorant guys right? i mean a laptop or computer is no less of an instrument than a guitar, fucktard

Good review. I'm a pretty big fan of his self-titled album, but this just isn't doing it for me. Where's the dub? He's like practically crossing over into drum and bass territory here.
