I love how they managed to take the pumping 4/4 of M62 and build melodies, atmosphere, and subtleties around it that completely disassociates it any other producers, genres, or places in time. A beat like that in the hands of almost anybody else would have those connections, whereas Autechre do what they do best and cut out any preconceived notions.

thats really whats so fascinating to me about their music, because on the surface its not really all that different from other music. it uses rhythm and melody in juxtaposition to create alluring and pleasing sounds in the human perceptive mode. but what makes them so astounding, and why i think theyre so far ahead of the curve, is the areas within that basic structure in which they choose to explore. it not so much about the music as it is the sound of the music, how each noise interacts with every other noise that it come into contact with, a constant push and pull between negative and positive space that makes you all the more aware of not only the differences in sound but how differences in sound build and destroy in relation to each other.
it is abstract music, but abstract in a way that is still adhering to the basic structures that best allows music to have both visceral and cerebral effects on the listener. its so much farther ahead than other forms of experimental "music" because it does not eschew what makes music musical (a far cry from "experimental" music like noise and other related genres, which i honestly find to be the most banal and vapid forms of musical expression out there). it is music taken to the furthest extremes of it's own confines.
that's why i like to say that these guys are the true successors of the kind of things brian eno and his contemporaries were trying to do all those years ago. its not about making "anti-music", but taking music as far as it can go before it reaches that limit.

exactly, well said. there's so many other producers and sound artists out there who are far more
mechanical and unhinged in their approach to music making, but its not about that at all. it's about
taking those common ideas and warping them into thresholds all their own. it's as if they're giving us
a thread of reality to hold on to, only to take us someplace we've never quite been before.
