You should have rated this lower, it's one of their worst albums. The In The Presence of Enemies tracks are insanely boring, and so are most of the other ones.

They're a perfect example of DT wankery and non-songwriting gone wrong. Octavarium is 24 minutes, but THAT one, on the other hand, is awesome.

Just like I posted on the other review...The Ministry of Lost Souls is not wankery and Repentance is not needlessly repetitive.

Like I had to do, think about what is happening during the first piece at the time the instrumental comes in: the male character is in transition from one world to another. The initial chug riff has a rather circular effect. It was only until I tried to imagine what was happening that this section made any sense.

Consider, before dismissing this as pointless babble, that I actually succeeded in changing someone's opinion on the track with this explication.

The theme of Repentance is repentance and being forgiven. You may never have been in this situation at this level, but understanding the process of repentance and being forgiven is key to the piece. Listen to the last of the spoken words: "Will you forgive me?" and "It still hurts..."

Hence, why the remainder of Repentance takes a while to come to its conclusion. Forgiveness is not instant - sometimes it takes a painfully long time. The feeling I get is that each offense confessed by the spoken voices is now being lifted off my shoulders.

Now, that being said, the 3 rating is about right. I like a lot of the material, but there's several plain embarrassing moments. The band has improved since Octavarium, but that album was where they simply lost their magic. Train of Thought was still 100% pure DT.

"The theme of Repentance is repentance..."

Yes, it certainly is. But I have to say, I actually agree with most of what you said - Repentance used to bore me, but I had to kind of figure that one out.
