To a certain extent I agree



Look at all these 2014 year end lists. Now think about what a year end list would look like for say, 1986 (or pick any year from back then) or so.



Has it become too watered down? Lack of inspiration?

Maybe. Or maybe we cannot relate so much because we grew up in a different era. But generally speaking, I think that there is a lack of inspiration. Looking back to the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s there's so much quality in each decade and so much new and exciting stuff. Even the 90s had all the grunge and underground metal stuff (black, gothic, etc.).

I agree that a lot of rock and metal is lacking in inspiration and substance these days, especially "throwback" bands/artists, but I certainly don't feel that way about music in general.
