Nice, Michael. I think this is your best JBT review, loved the intro.

Havn't heard anything off this yet, should probs get on it.

Yeah, Billy, I expect you'll like this. Check out "Close To You" and see what you think.

so this is a 3 to 3.5 i'm guessing

Spot on, an unfortunately drastic drop from my initial rating.

Michael is the new CK, now that Daveyboy is Staffyboy.

I mean, he's even doing the discog reviews now. Its Davey all over.

But yes, TO THE DEATH.

Naww, you guys flatter me too much. Besides, I can't kill CK, then I wouldn't be everyone's best friend because I wouldn't be his best friend, lol.

They sold out, that is not how I roll.

I showed "Close To You" to a friend as an example of their new sound, she gave me disgusted look and I swear she wanted to destroy my iPod so it would never be played in her presence again.

Awesome review.

Thank you, and thanks to every other compliment as well for that matter.

I actually think the more accesible sound suits them better it was more entertaining for me at least. Though i do miss some of Butler's guitar antics.

Yeah, I can understand that.

Ultimately though it doesn't even matter, there's a fresh wave of Butler clones coming through now who are just as good and sometimes better (Kim Churchill, go check out his myspace now if you haven't already). Butler may well be a has-been, but there's plenty of material to replace him with.

Deviant.

Thanks guys, I reckon the album artwork looks sick as a feature. (random coincidence: 3/4 of the features have animal themed album covers)

@Atavan: That it is, one of the best songs.

@dub sean: yeah, that is understandable.

@Eskate87: You probably won't like it much, but check it out anyway

Edit: lol, Dougie got the coincidence first

Disappointing album in my eyes. Hopefully it really is a transgressional album to something far greater. Probably about a 3.

Still love JBT though so I won't let one 'good' album change my opinion of his excellency.

Quick put in Usher over Erykah Badu and make it 4/4.

"Michael has taken over CK's status as Everyone's Best Friend."

Good luck with that Michael. All yours... No need for any duel to the death.

Good review. I like the lead single, so I have no issues with the catchiness that sounds like it may be on show here. But I still wonder if the changing of JB's backing musicians has meant some of the X-factor is gone. I really liked the middle ground that 'Grand National' took.

Its not unfortunately. He's been working towards a full-on rock sound ever since he started, its just that it was a gradual process up until now. I expect Butler is proud of himself for this record, he's accomplished what he wanted to. With that in mind, he'll probably just keep doing it this way, he's not one to go back to his roots (note how the only song from his debut that he'll play live is Ocean, he's even dropped a lot of Three off the set list)

Haha, thanks mate.

In terms of the musicians, I think he should have stuck with a solid group for more than one album. Look at the difference between Three and John Butler, they improved so much. I wonder what would have happened if they'd been stable between Sunrise Over Sea and Grand National. Instead he broke that stability and, in my eyes, it cost him.

Thank you for the compliments Observer and Awesomesauce.

@Awesomesauce: Lol, he's not a hippy any more, he cut off his dreadlocks a few years ago and said "its not who I am anymore"

Based on liking or disliking 'Close To You', do you reckon I should check this out at all if I felt the song sounded like John having lost all his trademarks and writing mediocre alternative rock with vocals that really do not suit it?

To be quite honest a metal record would be quite interesting, though i doubt Butler could pull off the vocals, lol.

@zuzek: If you dislike "Close To You" then a lot of this album isn't going to sit well with you. Get it for free and see what you think, then if you really like it buy it, but I don't think you'll like much of this.

Man, for die-hard fans it is kind of a let down, you have to admit that.

Listen to Ocean and then listen to Close To You and tell me you don't feel annoyed that John Butler has let himself go that much.

Fuck that shit. If they want the same record every fucking year they should listen to Xavier Rudd.
