A balance between the two is necessary, yes. I was simply saying there is nothing wrong with comparing new material to old.
|
| |
Just point out the pros and cons of older material and if the newer material improves upon it. At least, thats what I try to do.

@emim
5not inherently, but there is potential

there's nothing wrong comparing an album to the band's past works, but it shouldn't make up the crux of your argument. btw i didnt read the review so i have no idea what joey is complaining about.

this is an ok review... what really gets to me bout this review is in the paragraph where u mention the "guest performances" on the album... u say that Alvestam does a great job with his part and that's why SS shouldn't have let him go...WTF? how does his vocal performances (which are always amazing) on this album have anything to do with his partying with SS? just seems like personal bias which I don't think adds anything to the review this record... same thing goes for TD and Dave Peters... if anyone else chimes in on this... am I just ignorant to how to write reviews or correct?
I
On a personal note though (which is kinda funny giving what I'm bitching about) I have to strongly disagree with u bout u opinon on Peters... that dude ruined the band... and I thought he was a perfect voice for them back on haymaker and to an extent vendetta... but since then his godsmack worship vocals are awful despite somewhat generic but ok music...

It's a good review, but it's sounding more like a 3.5 to me.

Glad to see a positive review, this band gets a lot of hate (unwarrented, IMO).

Dave Peters is perfect for Throwdown because everyone in the band is terrible. I will edit it later Magnus, I don't have time right now

Descending Upon Us is pretty enjoyable upon first listen. Not liking LifeWar though.

This man is completely ignorant to the amount of work that the band goes through to create a record. Your opinion is subjective, and since we live in America, where the "freedom of speech" clause exists and ends when you don't agree with a person, I am exercising my right to essentially give you the finger.
When you've sat in the studio, spent hours writing lyrics, riffs, rhythm parts, drums, bass, produce it, mix and master it...keep your vocals up year round so that you can be ready to enter the studio at any time...
Well, even then, I believe you'd have no right to say anything.
You entered this review with a bias against Demon Hunter...and so, nothing you say can be trusted.
While it's true no review can ever be 100% objective, one should still try to put off their own opinion and view and approach the target as unbiased as possible. You have failed to do this.
So, my opinion is this...you have a complete lack of understanding for the amount of work that goes into a work of musicianship like this...and if this was your first review, I'd cut you slack, because ignorance is okay if you don't know any better...but from what I've read and seen, you do, and yet still proceeded.
Fail.

^Fail
By your logic nobody can be criticized so long as they've put a lot of work into it. If you spend an entire year perfecting your vocals and they still sound like shit, I am allowed to say you sound like shit.

Would say...researching the background of an artist and audience of an album be as fruitful as knowing its previous release inside and out??
If the reviewer managed to do that he/she would know that the album title is a play on words from a quote from the Apostle Paul describing "Thorns". Me being able to recognize this, I can appreciate how the whole album revolves around this idea...
Maybe the author doesn't know/care...but to accurately give a review of an album I believe this to be a prerequisite.
That said, DH being a christian band, they don't need to be cut any "slack". 99% of what the Christian music industry gets there hands on, gets over-processed beyond recognition. Personally I believe DH's music stands on its own two feet and speaks for its self. Being part time musicians and having the record sales they have its no small feat.
Now enough what I think, back to the review.
I see your final review as 3.5(Great). 75% of your review tares the Album and the band limb from limb and the last couple sentences act like a pat on the back saying "Good Job"..while smirking and walking away.
Your entitled to your opinion, but it seems lopsided considering the review.
(Edit)
Whats not to like about the artwork? Ya its done by the same guy who did triptych. But seems cool enough.

Blood in the Tears had the potential to surpass "My Heartstrings Come Undone" but the chorus was blandish. They could've made it epic! Overall though, I enjoyed the album more than Storm the Gates of Hell. The people who think DH is "poor" are a thorn on the butt! WONT' BOW TO STUPID MEN XD
