But this isn't atmospheric at all dammit.

I agree, and disagree, I find that if a band has a Keyboardist, it's hard for them not to have some degree of atmosphere, exlcuding bands like HORSE etc, bands that use it as a separate entity. maybe I am off on a bit of a obscure path, but I usually feel something when I hear a keyboard the way bands like HvH uses it.

I see it one of two ways really when a band has keyboardist - kind of obviously now i think about it.
Either they do add atmospheric textures and worthwhile melody to compliment the rest of the band or they are simply present to
cover up for deficiencies with the other musicians, music that would otherwise be bland is blanketed over with layers of pointless
keyboard. Prime examples are bands like Asking Alexandria who without a keyboardist would be somehow more of a laughing
stock. It doesn't fool anyone with half an ear.
Now I am not grouping this album on the same level and I do think they keyboard actually kind of has a unique sound but I was
just expecting so much more from their promising debut. They seem to have abandoned the melodic guitar passages that were
prevalent in their previous record and just gone for all out on keyboards and detuned chug alongs for the most part.

That is more than fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to give a reason as to why you didn't think this delivered on the promise of the EP. I just think it was a really solid effort, most of the songs have had good replay value for me, and it's only a debut LP. Plus, doing my best to support Australian music! haha.
What are some bands you would recommend that use keyboards more affectively?

Keyboardist is comparable to Born Of Osiris. Except all the keys kinda sound the same in each song.

It's a great album, but didn't jump out at me as I was hoping/expecting it to and took a few listens to really get into.

I like this about as much as I like the EP, all equal.
Looks like I'm in the minority though.

Well, they have good taste in music regardless - they hosted short.fast.loud on triple j last night and played alot of sputnik favourites.

I'm sure you'll find the playlist on the triple j website somewhere but I remember: Refused, Brand New, Modern Life Is War, Alexisonfire, Circa Survive, Minus the Bear, Converge, ETID, Gallows, unfortunately themselves...and I only listened for the first two hours.

The synth really hits harder than their breakdowns and their screaming is really monotonous, but the clean vocals make up for it.

Listening to 'Positively Shifted' at the moment. It's quite good. The instrumentation and vocals maintain my interest largely but I feel that it would greatly benefit from being a bit louder. It seems like it's holding back a bit.
