Not as good as their first, rating's probably a little harsh, but I had pretty massive expectations for this. It'll probably go up after a while tbh.

i cant help but feel really indifferent to this album. its difficult to explain but since the initial 'omg' appeal has worn off, its fallen into that grey area where i dont dislike it but it all goes by so sedately that by the end of it its just sort of like 'well thats that then'.

this

reading this made me turn it on again, for all those oh-so-sweet little ditties.

Review is excellent, as expected.

Great review Strikey (pos worthy). You put your case forward in a clear & logical manner. Well done.

Would you say that this album would actually be a better entry point for the band?

Nope. in my opinion (sorry, I know you were asking Strikey I'm not trying to be a dick)... but MOF is just as catchy and accessible, albeit in a different, more subtle manner.

It's a complicated issue, that, Davey, really. Like I say, a lot of people will enjoy this record more because of the context it comes in. This is likely to be the album which breaks them through into the mainstream (NME are already sitting up and taking notice) but it lacks the emotional power of their older material -- mainly their sophomore record. This is certainly an accessible place to begin but that doesn't really mean it's the best, if you get what I mean.

For all I keep bleating on about the emotional weight and suffocated nature of Midnight, it's pretty much a pop album dressed up in depressed indie-folk clothes and intelligent lyrics, listen to The Modern Leper and you'll see what I mean -- one of my favourite tracks ever.

Idk I think Im enjoying this more as a record.

I mean it doesnt have any songs as good as Fast Blood or Head Rolls Off (except maybe Things) but I think this contains a moving atmosphere that MOF didn't have.

I think the main problem many may have is how dense this is compared to MOF, because many may feel this looses the intimacy that the latter had.

I dont feel that way at all, if anything I find this to be more intimate.

Plus I never realized how fantastic of a lyrisist Hutchison is.

"It's a complicated issue, that, Davey..."

I ask all the tough questions. And while the answer wasn't crystal clear, I do understand what you're getting at. Ta.

MOF is actually an album that might break you through into indie, Davey.

Arcade Fire's 'Funeral' did that years back.

Haha, I know you enjoy certain albums from the genre, but most of them are crossovers. Still, you may appreciate this band.

Davey, is Matthew Good's Hospital Music and Mono and Worlds End Girlfriend split still on that list? Lol.
