thrash metal withered and died because it was too generic and there wasn't enough innovation; too many bands were jumping on the bandwagon and mindlessly copying each other, just like deathcore nowadays
and this album had nothing to do with inspiring nu metal, that's the fault of shitty groove metal bands like Pantera

You make your point well, so I won't neg, although I disagree with your rating. This album had the opposite effect on me as it did you. I was 10 when this came out and before this I was listening to the worst shit you can imagine. This is the album that got me into metal, rock, hard rock, pretty much everything. The effect it had on me was it led me to straigtht to Best Buy to purchase Lightning, Puppets, and Justice, and I enjoyed them even more. Album rules.

Dumb review, by saying they started nu metal you would be comparing them to actual nu metal bands. And I struggle to think of any that sound anything like this album at all. This album is great.

Slayer hasn't sold out since the day the started playing - that doesn't mean all of their albums are good, but they are true to themselves and not corporate whores...
Their late 90's albums tried so hard to jump on the nu metal boat it's not even funny

The major flaw I find in this review as a whole is your equating technical musicianship directly with quality. A song doesn't have to be complex to be good. I find your whole review to read, their songs aren't as technical so they're not as good which is a really bad argument imo. Also, most of your review was more of a history of Metallica and where the Black Album fit in then an actual review of the album, read very little to anything of you commenting about the album itself.

Just listened to Of Wolf and Man, and it ruled my face for approximately the 1000th time.

I enjoyed this review, album is a 3 for me. There are so many genuinely bad albums out there that I can't put this in their company.

Good review, and I agree with a lot of the points. I don't think you give a lot of the songs enough credit, though. It's still a solid disc, despite the disappointing direction it led them.

Negged for the following reasons:
- In the Eleven paragraphs, you only talk about the actual music in two. This is an album review, not a skewed history lesson.
- "It is not only my theory that the black album ultimately destroyed thrash metal, but it eventually led to the death of a big chunk of the underground metal world, made moshing commonplace on MTV, and could conceivably be held responsible for the loads of trend bands that followed - and that includes the whole "Nu Metal" movement." Is SUCH a ridiculous and inaccurate statement that it makes my head spin.
- It's obvious that the story behind the album is hindering your ability to review it on a fair slate. This is an obvious one-sided review.

That's because, as I said, this album has been reviewed to death on here, so I wanted an inspired debate about the impact of this album. Look - I realize what I am contending is far-fetched, but I think it's worth discussing. I'm not blaming the black album for Nu Metal, I'm blaming the black album for getting the ball rolling TOWARDS Nu Metal...
As other bands tried to chase the success Metallica got with this album, they all ended up betraying their thrash roots - not just technicallity, but true artistic meaning. The Black album is a slab of corporate-created rock meant for mass appeal, and if you like it that's fine. But don't go kidding yourself about it's intentions - there is no true art behind this record at all - it's uninspired and completely forced. The fact that it was successful doesnt really matter does it? To rate this thing a 5 is to admit you don't like the genre in which this sucker pretends to belong to, that's all I'm saying.
If you like corporate metal that's fine - I listen to some of it too... But in 1991, Metallica had established far too much integrity in the scene to expect their loyal fans to swallow this garbage. At least a band like Korn, or Kid Rock, or Limp Bizkit does not pretend to be anything other that the trend band they are.
Case in point - Death Magnetic... Now that the trend is dead and no one cares, Metallica is trying to recapture the fans who were actually impacted by their music when it meant something - not just listening to whatever is on the radio.
