Yeah try Enthrone Darkness Triumphant or Stormblast by Dimmu Borgir and Vempire or Dusk and Her Embrace by Cradle of Filth. That should help you get into black metal. You could even try some Graveworm or Old Man's Child. Those are pretty accessible as well.

But the more melodic stuff is usually the stuff that helps people get into the genre. If he wanted to more black/thrash stuff then I would go with what Balls said and get some Destroyer 666.

The only band that can pull off melodic and still be manly is Primordial.

That would actually be another band that would probably help someone get into black metal. Primordial fucking rules.

Good review, I don't get what a lot of the hate for this album is about, or the band for that matter, Exodus have been consistently putting out great thrash for years regardless of trends or what the metal community in general think about them

See, I saw that Emperor was labeled 'symphonic black metal', and thought 'hey, this should be a decent starting point'. Guess not.

They are symphonic black metal, but their earlier albums still had that raw production. You would probably need to start with the bands with pretty good production.

i repeat what I said earlier; start with some blackened thrash bands like Destroyer 666 and Sodom's and Kreator's first albums

in the end this is metal though, not overly produced radio pop. just deal with the production
