I agree with Adam.
The fact is, is that Mono did not come in and try to do something completely original, cause that rarely of works.
What they did do is take the familiar post rock formula and did it better than well anyone.

but the formula itself is what I don't like.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong!
and it seemed that they were slowly associating Mono with that handful
Mono has always been a part of that handful. Brandon and I have discussed this a little bit,
and he always says Mono is so consistent it should be illegal. And it's true; Mono have never put
out a bad record.
In context to the entire package, the album is too epic
Is there such a thing? Thats like saying Lord of The Rings sucks because it's too long.
The album has no variety
Sure it does, not every song sounds alike, it's not like Mono is the AC/DC of post-rock.
Follow the Map and Pure as Snow are the perfect songs to break up the massive songs in the album
too, they sound totally different from the first three and final two.
I would have much rather have seen them take different approaches with their songs and
create some different ambiances that compliment each other
You have to understand this is almost like program music. When you actually buy the record it comes
with sheets of text that tell a story that compliments the music, therefore the music has to follow
the mood of the text. Trust me, reading the story while playing the album is a much better
experience that just sitting and listening while being distracted by something else, it just gives
the album more life.
If you haven't listened to any other of Mono's records you should. I think you would really enjoy
You are There or One Step More, they have more variety and different moods like you were
mentioning.

Then I can definatly see why you wouldn't enjoy this that much.

No, because LOTR is epic because the moments of action and resolution are far and few between, which makes them better, and the events are very fresh and unpredictable, unlike this. Hymn To The Immortal Wind is like having homo erotic Sam and Frodo scenes and crazy Gandor sieges, with nothing in between, on a loop for three hours.
it's not like Mono is the AC/DC of post-rock.
that's basically what I'm saying.
Follow the Map and Pure as Snow are the perfect songs to break up the massive songs in the album too, they sound totally different from the first three and final two.
They really aren't in my opinion.

yo adam citizen kane sucks
You are right and almost every major film critic as well as the AFI are wrong.

are we really going to go into this? have you watched citizen kane? just because it's deemed a classic by every critic (mostly for its historical context and ahead-of-it's time structure/storytelling as downer said), doesn't mean i'm obliged to like it. it's like the groundbreaking comedians of the '50s and '60s were obviously pioneers, but if you watch tape of bob hope or sid caesar or whoever, its not even that funny to modern audiences

Way to go Derek - I couldn't have said it better myself. You have my vote.
I feel I deserve to be under Adam's chastisement as well for approaching this record the wrong way; in all seriousness, I'm probably just not ready to take it in per se and access it properly. I keep getting the feeling that I'm missing something when I listen to this.

We did, and it's more like they've never put out a record that was incredible. If you feel up to it, Chewie, maybe look into the rest of their discography.
And I don't think any of the songs sound the same really at all, they do however carry the same sort of atmosphere which works perfectly with the story that goes along with the record.

I don't think theres much more to be said, you obviously don't like what the album is doing and probably never will so thats that. I think the Mono to LOTR comparison works pretty well, the slow buildups lead to epic climaxes like the dialogue and storytelling lead to grand battles in LOTR.
Mono doesn't make the same song twice, if you listen to this album and think everything sounds exactly the same you need to get your musical ears checked. Sure the structures are similar, but apart from that the songs are very diverse in their sound.

structure is usually the basis for musical diversity.

An absolutely necessary review, since it mirrors popular opinion instead of Sputnik opinion. This album is fine, but it's not special and it probably won't be changing many people's opinions of the genre. There is prettier post-rock, there is more epic post-rock, there is much better post-rock.

...since it mirrors popular opinion instead of Sputnik opinion.
I tried to say that before, but they wouldn't believe me. This is an instance where sputnik does not match up with the general consensus of critics.
