"What the! I just added this girl to our Sputnik like yesterday and wanted to review (sad face)" Sorry Puddles, I had actually had the review written a week or two back but had to get my 2 new releases out first. Thanks for adding to the database though.
"is she a pop-star? or a guitarist? lets face it, she doesnt have the talent or execution of john mayer to pull both off..." John Mayer!?!?!? That's a strange comparison.
"miley cyrus+motley crue alrighty then" I couldn't resist the formula, although I did leave it out of the review. Motley Crue isn't the perfect 80's hair-metal comparison, but the likes of Van Halen are relevant imo.

"nice one Boy, this woman can really play nicely." Thanks (leggo) bloc.
"Adelaide muso's representin. Now we have Hilltop Hoods AND Orianthi" And that other band whose name escapes me now. What are their names? They had that video last year where they were playing in the back of a moving truck. I think the song was called 'Emergency'...

i make the comparison to john mayer as he is firstly a guitarist, who plays pop, which is pretty much what orianthi is trying to do. im not saying that they are musically similar, but the dual appeal is what they both strive for, however orianthi's attempt is a little more exaggerated. i think mayer succeeds in making fans of both areas like him, though i feel like orianthi only alienates both by putting off guitarists with shitty music, and pop-lovers with out of place guitar solos.

I guess that's a valid argument to a point... BUT the fact that they play different kind of guitar could also make it invalid. I suppose what you are trying to say is that both of them are trying to find a balance & Mayer has found it better. I can't disagree with that.
However, I'd still give Orianthi some time... I think she's young enough & potentially talented enough to find a better balance in the future. Or maybe even to ditch the balance & concentrate on one side of things.

yer i agree that the different style of guitar/music plays a role in attaining balance, however shred was popular for a long time... and even her 'mentor' santana gained fairly big recognition with a few duets here and there which were quite popular. although, with that being said, maybe it just means that her style of playing is just not what her music needs, which brings me back to the point of the solos being out of place.

... or maybe out of "time". They reminded me of 80's hair-metal a fair bit, and while I still like that kind of music every now & then, I know I'm in the minority.
Again though, with experience I'm certain she can find a better balance and use her talent more (for want of a better word) wisely.

I hate According to You terribly...The girl can play but I mean she really just sounds like she's chucking in some random kickass guitar-ness just for the sake of it, and I believe that shows a lack of good songwriting. However I did not know she was Aussie OR the guitarist for Jacko and this review has twisted my arm somewhat. Guess I'm trying to say I'll try and find something that isn't According to You ehh...

As I mentioned earlier, the poppiness of 'According To You' is not really explored elsewhere on the album. Unfortunately, the thrown in token solos are... & your point on songwriting could very well be valid.

BUT ACCORDING TO

haha im working at JB at the moment, and on one of the new big panasonic plasmas, they have this demo clip of her running on a loop, but there isnt any sound... so its basically a looped 10 mins of orianthi standing there with a PRS . its her best work to date.

Cool review, looks like I missed the boat with this one.

In pop music, guitar is often used to just bolster the hook, but she definitely does a lot more with the guitar. Reminds me more of power pop and blues. It is her guitar that makes this a 4.5 to me instead of a 4. Good review except I don't get the Nickelback reference.

LOL liledman.
Ross, you miss the boat more than a failed refugee.
Wow a 4.5 mvdu. There's no doubt she is a little bit different, that's for certain... And your points about the way guitar is used in pop is mostly valid.
The Nickelback reference was more to do with the way some songs just meander along without really making a mark one way or another. I'm usually talking about the first half of most tracks though, as her solos are better than Nickelback.

Hi Daveyboy,
I don't agree that they meander like Nickelback (NB are boring while she is not IMO,) but I still liked the review - thanks for pointing her out.
