Nice review, i'm glad to see how honest you were with this Adam. Would've been easy to be more generous with the rating considering how good they've been in the past, but you kept it real.
I completely agree with your conclusions btw, don't lower your rating.

"i'll concede to a 2 if enough people contest the rating, but there's no way it's better than that"
that doesnt make sense lol

1st time around it's pretty unmemorable but I think 1.5 is way too low. Doesn't even really remind me of the afternoon. So far it's at a 2.5 for me.

gave it a couple of listens and im gonna have to disagree with you on this one. I do know where your coming from but I think once i got in the headspace this was pretty cool

They're taking random tracks from the EPs - as I said in the review, three of the tracks on here are interludes/SFX. Be kinda silly to release those songs as singles, no? Haha.
Haha fair enough, makes sense now I stop to think about it. Good review by the way.

Cheers.
Alex, if you get chance, write a sound-off or something, would y ou? I'm interested in seeing a positive opinion about this because it honestly bores the living fuck out of me. I don't see how it could come close to being 'good'; sure, there are enjoyable moments (more like, a few cool vocal melodies & Falling Into You) but as an album I don't get how anyone can listen to it more than twice unless they're trying to review it.

sure thing. I do agree that this is probably one of the worst things they've released. and yea about a little less half of the tracks are filler (like the morning ep). But yea i def. have to say this grew on me-took me a few listens but yea it clicked.
I'm actually gonna go see them tonight-should be good =).
Edit: i might write a review for this actually. I don't really like the sound off too much and I think I should expand on that.

Wow, I didn't know these guys were capable of a 1.5 release. Bummer.

Album Rating: 3.5
Ah come on, this ís a bit ridiculous I'm afraid. I really like their more experimenting style. But next to their experimenting they also manage to make nice songs!
Though not as good as (m)orning, it is still worth 3/3.5

they're shit when they experiment. they lose track of the foundations of what makes/made them good and the creativity is a mess. using the words experimentation and creativity loosely, of course... it's hardly earth-shattering anyway.

Good review.
This is first I heard of Mae, and I'm far from put off. The harmonies in 'In Pieces' are some of the most well written I have heard in a while, and in parts where the bass follows the melody is inspired.
Plus, 'Falling Into You' is beautiful, definitely a track to lie in the grass bathing in the afternoon sun :p
Most of the other tracks are meh, but the ones I mentioned I liked so much I would give it a 3.

It's like an indie version of dream theater - six degrees of inner turbulence! I love it!

Album Rating: 2.5
Every time I try and listen to this I can't make it through some of the songs because it is such a tedious endeavor.
But I've been digging the snot out of (e)vening and I don't know why.

Seriously? I thought this EP was pretty good. I like it more than a lot of the songs on Destination: Beautiful and Singularity...
The Everglow still remains their best album. Something magic happened when recording that album.

This really isn't that good...(e)vening and everglow are both borderline classics

This is a lot better than a 1.5 - 2. In Pieces and Falling Into You are both really good.

I don't think the sound of the album really suits the band at all. Blah I'm just gonna go listen to
evening and The Everglow now

I've been a huge Mae fan since the beginning, but I must admit, this is tragically their worst. Not "bad" by any means, but certainly not what I had expected to hear from Mae. Luckily, they made up for it with (e)vening.

Knott, you gotta admit that "In Pieces" and "Falling Into You" are both really good, despite that this album is definitely Mae's worst.

I think I did just that with "Falling Into You" in my review of this EP, and I can't even remember enough about this album to recall "In Pieces" in more than pieces, but I think that was one of the thirty tracks that went on for too long!
