So this is bad... But since this is Say Anything I guess it's amazing!!!
Oh wait.

Yeah this is really restrained in comparison to IARB and IDOFG. It's still really enjoyable but it's lacking the extra something they had. Perhaps too consistent now.

too consistent what? what do you mean by that?

I guess i meant it in the sense that this album sort of flows way too well and a lot of the songs blur into each other for me. It's missing stand out tracks, theres only 1 really. Not a bad thing esssentially but it's lacking diversity and feels watered down.
That being said it's still one of the most enjoyable albums to be released this year.
|
| |
Gotcha... so you think they played it a little too safe in the diversity department? I'd agree to an extent.
Which did you think was the standout, "Ahh.. Men"?

"Mara and Me" actually, "Ahh.. Men" feels like they tried to capture the same feeling as a song like "Alive With" but it falls far short.

Album rules and review is great. At times I think some of the lyrics are misplaced, but then taken in context of the song, each line makes complete sense. Bemis knows what he's doing.

This album is just so damn good!

i didn't like the last paragraph because it seemed a little out of left field and contrived, but the rest of the review was great
i don't like this as much as ...Is A Real Boy but that's mostly because all of the reasons you gave for IARB not being as good are what make that album seem more endearing to me (the imperfections make it seem more human, like a work of art etc.)
whilst this album's polish makes it a lot more accessible and professional, i don't think it has the emotional force of IARB if you know what i mean (i'm not even sure i know what i mean tbh)
but yeah good review, probably my album of the year or something
|
| |
Thanks... I get what you mean. I was a little too dead set on the conclusion and can't find a good segue though.
And I understand the flaws thing... most of my "classic" albums have that quality (i.e. In The Aeroplane, The Midnight Organ Fight) but IARB just doesn't have that same level of personal connection for me that I understand it does for some.

it's probably because i'm angsty and bitter

Great review and great album. I like how they tried to blend what worked well on both there last albums and for the most part succeeded. Kinda disappointed me a few more of these new songs werent played when i seen them.
