This is really the only great post-Perfect Strangers album to me

The last great Deep Purple in my opinion (and first in a long time as well). Have it on CD, still love putting it on from time to time.

Aviator is so damn good

The bass on Loosen My Strings is gold.

The most shocking album by Purple in terms of expectations and what was delivered. The Morse era is slammed by Blacmore-ites but this album stands right there with any of the classics.

Great review and great album as well. Loosen My Strings and Sometimes I Fell Like Screaming are true diamonds. On these two, Morse shows how guitar should be played with heart.

Exactly. This is the best "Steve Morse era" album imo. Has a good balance of riffs and melodic playing

I must admit, i'm one of those people who never jam these records cause of my bias; i'm not that inclined for anything DP did that isn't lead by Blackmore. But if this is so good as you guys say, then i must check it out at some point.

I can understand that bias. I've been a Steve Morse fan forever, so I naturally have a bias that side. But I enjoy Blackmore's style as well :-)
This is nothing groundbreaking, but if you go with an open mind I'm sure you'll find some stuff to enjoy

"Steve Morse is a great guitarist but his Deep Purple work is probably his weakest material"
Overall, you mean?
If that is what you're saying, then it is quite an unpopular opinion. I've discussed this with so many DP fans and the general consensus is that he took his game 1-2 steps further. Probably they never heard him playing outside of DP.
I even read an interview of him back in 2013 where he says that his time with DP made him a better guitarist...
go figure...

Yep overall. To each their own, but honestly I think most people that think this is their best haven't properly listened to his Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band, and solo stuff. Its also a lot more obscure than Deep Purple stuff and instrumental, which is tougher to get into
I'd recommend Dixie Dregs' What If or Free Fall albums for a taste of some of his best stuff as a songwriter (jazz rock/fusion)
He's someone that considers himself to evolve as a musician so I'm not surprised he would say that, but his earlier years were his best from a songwriting standpoint imo

So glad they finally put this on apple music

Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming is still so good. I need to listen to more of Deep Purple.

Much better than expected
