Thanks. Yeah, I doubt it is something you would really be into to be honest. It's as poppy as it gets.

i know, i never had any plans of checking this out anyway ;)

Haha can't blame you.
In fact, I hardly get to check out most recs that people give me on this site. There is just so much music out there! Most the stuff I find is either by browsing various reviews on other sites or even listening to different radio stations like Pandora or something

Different opinions on this record. . . I might check it out

Great review, pos'd. I personally really liked the first paragraph, especially:
"...or just the sheer amount of success the band has had in their current career, something about The Fray has caused the more elite music audience to sneer and cast criticism on the band’s music that I find misplaced."
^Bingo.
Oh, and Happiness is amazing, IMO their best song by far.
|
| |
yeah it's all to do with success
oh no wait
and no. happiness fucking SUCKS.
|
| |
It's not that bad... I really like the song actually.
The climax element of the song could have been better though... they kind of came up a little too short and should have gone farther and louder with it.

the fray go metal!!!!!!!!!!! haha

Not exactly what I was thinking of.... but yeah that would be interesting to see.

success has nothing to do with me disliking this band. i thought their debut was okay, just hearing the singles over and over turned me off a little bit. this CD, however, shows little to no creative forward motion and the band just sounds bland. if this was an indie band out of montana that has sold 100 records i'd say the same thing.

Yea, the build could have been a lot stronger, maybe ditch the gospel choir and bring back the high, delayed, alternate-picked guitar from the chorus of You Found Me (maybe that's just the post-rock guy in me tho).
Lol @ metal ow playing on AM 1500, KVLT: The Frae
Haha no i get what you're saying, I guess I wasn't talking about people who actually critically evaluate and, well, understand music; a lot of my friends just dismiss them as "that one band from the radio and that one TV show" and don't even give them a chance just because some teenage girls like them
And I feel like yea, for the most part this CD was similar to their last, but on the last few tracks they expanded into some new directions, bringing in some folky influences (Happiness, first half, and Fair Fight) and maybe even a little jazzy influence (the brushes on the drum part in Ungodly Hour). I also felt like his lyrics were a step up (for the most part haha).
So while yea, it's not supah different, I feel like they showed a some improvement in the tiny box that they're more or less stuck in.

How people can hate this album is beyond me. It's more consistent than their debut, it's more powerful, and unlike a lot of pop rock, it's very thoughtful and earnest-sounding.
On my first listen-through, I thought the songs sounded rather similar; on my second listen-through, something clicked. The Fray's lead vocalist has a love-it-or-hate-it voice, I will admit, but otherwise there isn't much wrong with this record.
My favorite songs on this album are "Never Say Never", "Enough for Now" (which might be the best song The Fray has put out in their career), "Ungodly Hour", and "Happiness".
